Have all the kinks been worked out of the 6.0. If not, what should I expect for a 2005 model?? When they first came out, I spoke with a mechanic who said give the 6.0 a couple of years to work problems out. He said my 7.3 uses about 65% of its capabilities and the 6.0 uses about 97% ot its capabilities, he then said mechanical failures would happen more frequently on the 6.0. This is what I want to avoid>> any advise would be appreciated.

I have an early 03 6.0. One of the first. Based on the interviews I have had with Ford engineers and my personal experience, I would say the mechanic you spoke with must be a Chevy or Dodge mechanic. I think the 6.0 is a good engine. The majority of the problems, in my opinion, is the dealers and mechanics not being adequately trained. The diesel tech at the shop I use is excellent and I have a good running truck. Any problems I had were resolved.
'04 with 15,000 miles. Squeeky belt replaced under warranty, that is it. If you would like I can solve your problem, you can buy the '05 and I will store it in my garage for you until you feel all the problems have been worked out, hehe. These 6.0 are so much fun to drive. Welcome to the forum and I hope we can help...Deac
I have an '05 PSD and had an '02. Do I miss my '02? At times I do especially after dealing with Ford about the couple of issues with the '05. Am I happy with the '05? Mostly yes, I will be happier when I have a problem free one.
As far as I can tell from the postings here your odds of getting a worry free truck are pretty good. Remember, there are NO manufacturers out there that build a perfect vehicle every time, considering the alternatives I still feel that the PSD is ahead of the pack!

Given that many users of this forum have used tuners to increase the output of their 6.0s by as much as 100 HP or 220 lb-ft of torque and have experienced no problems with doing so - I'd say your mechanic is not correct.
Stock 6.0 output is 325 HP and 560 lb-ft of torque and increasing those numbers by 100 HP and 220 lb-ft is a gain of 33.8 and 39.3% respectively.
Were your mechanic correct about the 97% the 6.0 would blow as soon as a tuner were installed.
As you'll see if you spend much time searching the forum and reading through the various threads, there are a couple issues that early '03 6.0s had that were worked out mid year or so and only time will tell about how well the 6.0 will stand up over the long run. But for the most part I believe that 6.0 users are happy with their trucks.
Thanks for all the input. To answer your question, tim, I am not sure. He is a ford diesel mechanic and friend. I assume he said this to warn me away from the early 6.0 models. I told him I was thinking about trading my 01 and he said give it a year or two, to work out problems. Then he gave me those percents on the two motors. He was working on one of the 6.0 engines when I talked to him. He said the turbo was bad. He then said turbos and transmissions had been what he had seen most of, as far as problems go.
Well no secret, there…they had some early problems, all can, and will be worked by Ford...the 04’s, less problems...then the 05 even less....buy one, it is an unreal truck.....I had one of the problem ones and I have ordered my 05 so I am in the group that had some issues. Will still go back to Ford.

Tim, my (old?) service mgr kind of told me the same thing. He said for the '03 the problems were 1 in 3, the '04 it was 1 in 6 and the '05 it is too early to tell but he is seeing problems and his guesstimation is it will be something like 1 in 10.
