Hi. I am a new member to the group. I need some help replacing the heater core in a 1986 F 150 with the 4.9 6 cyl. and air. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Go under the hood and pull the two heater hoses going into the firewall.
Pull the glovebox inards by removing the 5 screws.
Now on the firewall just behind the glovebox, you should see a rectangular area of the vent system, pull the plug that is on it, remove the 8 or so 5/16 bolts and take that shroud off and that is your core. There are a couple U shaped things on the top and bottom that just lift out and then the whole heater core should just lift out.
Dear Lee,
Thanks for your help but the advice you gave me didn't work out.
Maybe you don't remember because it was last December. I just got around to it. I'm trying to replace a heater core in a '86 F150 with a 4.9L straight six with air. The core is in a shroud on the engine side of the firewall. I don't see any bolts on the outside or any way to get to it from the inside.Helllllp!!!! Thanks.
When i did mine, the bolts were all behind on the inside of the cab. i had to take out the glove box plastic, and i was able to remove the bolts. Not sure if its diffrent with AC, but mines heat only.
Dear members;
Can anyone help me replace the heater core on an '86 F150 with 4.9L straight 6 cyl. with air? A couple of guys have tried to help but they said the bolts were behind the glove box. On my truck the heater core is in a shroud on the engine side of the firewall. It is well to the left of the glove box. I have taken half of the dash apart, but can't see how it would come out inside. Thanks for your help.
If your heater core is in the black heater box is sounds like a non ac setup. If that is what you have there should be 4 studs sticking through the firewall ( three on the left side if looking from under the dash and one on the right) that you have to remove the nuts. then there should be two bolts on the outside ( one in the top center and the other top left if looking from the outside) once the 4 nuts and two bolts are removed the heater box should come of the firewall.
Thanks to everyone who helped me with my heater core replacement on the '86 F150. I finally got it. Kind of a hassle, but I've learned something.Thanks again.
