CD-ROM Spin Time Question

My CD-ROM drive has a very short 'spin time'. When I am using an application that takes info off of the CD, it'll spin up to read the info, and stay spun up for about 30 seconds, then it'll spin down. I would like for it to stay spun up longer.

Is there anyway to increase the spin time on my drive? Here are my compuer specs. . .

Dell Inspiron 8500 Laptop
2.4GHz Pentium 4M
512MB RAM
WinXP SP2

DVD/CD-RW Drve is listes as: QSI CDRW/DVD SBW-242

I've tried looking for a control in the Device Manager, but there doesn't seem to be one.

Any help?

Your CD-ROM will only spin the compact disk when you need to read or write something. Every CD-ROM has a time limit that if no I/O is happening then it will stop spinning it. There is no reason to keep it spinning really. And since you are using a Laptop, when it is spinning, it is eating your battery way up!

If it's not causing any probs, I wouldn't worry about it. If you added more RAM, it may spin up even less, since the read ahead cache could hold a lot of data.

There are also CD-ROM accelerator software programs that may or may not give you a much larger cache as well. I've never used them, so I can't say if they are any good or not.

To answer your question; Yes, you can increase the spin down time on your computer.

Use -> this. It's 19.95 for commercial use and free for home use (I think).

On your laptop you might not want to increase the spin time. That stupid little electric motor can really start sucking down your battery if it is running constantly. The only things that would take up more power are the HD motor, the exhaust fan, and the screen.

The computer will spin the disc up when it needs to read it. Otherwise there's no point in keeping it spinning. If you notice a serious lag between the time it spins up and the time it does something, then you might want to make sure the drive is working okay, the disc is clean, etc. Otherwise don't worry about it.

Thanks for the replies all. . .

This was bought to replace my old super fast powerhouse - a 133mhz 32mb Compaq Presario desktop. The laptop is plugged in almost 24/7, so battery life is of little concern to me.

Basically what is driving me mad is my Ford CD manual will read bit by bit from the CD as I scroll down a page. It's just coincidence that when I need to scroll down to the next page, the CD had just spun down. So I've gotta wait for it to spin up, read the info, then continue. It's a PITA when you're lookin at large wiring diagrams or lengthy tech articles!

furball69, thanks for the link, but it looks like 3MB Technologies (company that put out CDBreak) needs to buy more bandwidth!

Munkey you might be able to copy the CD onto your hard drive so it doesn't need to be in the CD drive to use it. Take a look at http://flatratetech.com/cgi-bin/ubbc...=001166#000000
