p0147 and rough idle when cold

For the last few cold mornings when i start my explorer it will idle fine, then i will hear a click and it sounds like it wants to stall. After a moment, i think i hear the click again and the idle surges a little. Eventually after the engine warms, the explorer will idle fine. This morning while driving to work my CEL light came on. I had the code read and it is P0174. Do these symptoms point to bad oxygen sensors?

Thank you in advance for you help
Thomas

clean your mass airflow sensor. It's a likely culprit.

It's probably sucking air from a vacuum leak somewhere. The SOHC's-if thats what you have- are known for leaky intake manifold O-rings.

i have a 97 explorer with the the sohc and 117k miles. I do remember that around 39k, I had a similar problem except the CEL light never came on. I had the oxygen sensors and gaskets replaced under warranty. Tonight, I cleaned the mass airflowsensor and reset the computer by disconnecting the batter for 5 mins. Will see what happens in the morning. I really appreciate the responses I have received

I agree Witn 87 XLT. Orings are the likley culprit. Their are upper and lower ones. I think its best to change both.

well, i cleaned the airflow sensor and iac, reset the codes and thought i was golden. The next morning it started up and maintained the idle. However, 2 days later is did the surging from 2k to 500. Looks like I will be changing manifold gaskets. I want to thank everybody again for taking the time to try and help me
