need help fast. can't get oil filter off. on too tight and filter collapsed prartially from wrench now i can't get enough pressure to turn it. any ideas
Try to slip a small piece of wood the same length as the filter along side the filter. Then try the oil filter wrench again. Try to get the wrench as close to the base of the filter as possible. If this fails you can drive a large screwdriver through the filter and turn it loose. If there is enough room to turn the screw driver.
Take a really big screw driver and punch that sucker into the filter, then give it a good turn and if it still don't come off, well, try harder. One note, if it is a FRAM, don't use them, I had one do the same on my Ranger and I will only use the Motorcraft from now on.
thanks for you help... i tried all of the suggestions to no avail and ended up with a oil filter wrench that has three prongs that tighten up as you do... added a 4 foot pole (helper arm) on the wrench and the stubborn ^&*( finally came off.
thanks again for you prompt responses.
i"ve always had problems with oil filters. until i bought an oil filter wrench from J.C. WHITNEY. It"s a coil wound backwards with a whinch adapter on the end of it.NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH FILTERS AGAIN.IT graps the whole out side shell of the filter, the more you twist the harder it grabs. when i put a new filter on, i fill it with oil so the engine doesn"t have to prime it. To keep from OVER TIGHTing the filter i use a thumb and two fingers to tighten it down. always check that the old gasket is off with the old filter.something that also gets over looked is the drain plug gasket it gives so you don"T strip the threads, also provides a seal.I replace it every 4th oil changed. i hope you find this usefull.bob
