My '64 is a mish-mash of old wires, new wires, splices, etc. I have a lot of intermittent problems. How are the generic wiring kits? They seem to be a fuse panel plus wire. The name-brand ones like Painless seem to be a lot more money. Are they worth it? I have a pretty good grasp on wiring, and could probably redo the existing harness, but I want to get-er-done, if you know what I mean.
Re-wired a CJ5 this past summer with one of the Painless kits. Once I had the fuse block installed and the wire bundles sorted into groups, the whole job was completed in one weekend. Spent one day before install reading and re-reading the instruction booklet and planning. The job went off without a hitch and I don't think I'll ever regret doing it. You will need to get a good pair of wire pliers, a good assortment of crimp connectors or solder connectors (whichever you want to use) and heat shrink for water tite connections, wire ties and electrical tape. Personally, I liked the Painless system and recommend it.
