7.3 swap

I was wondering if anyone has tried or thought about swapping a 99 or newer powerstroke into a 87-97 style truck? I know that the wiring would be a nightmare but i do think it would pretty cool if it would fit in.

A friend of mine replaced his the 6.9 diesel in his '86 f-250 with a 7.3 powerstoke out of a '95. he has an open downpipe, 80hp chip, and an open filter to the turbo on the stock engine and that truck burns out like crazy.

Was just wondering if anyone else has a tempted, before i atempt it. I have already put the diffs out of a 00 f350 under a 90 F250 with alittle modification. Dont want to spend all the time and money trying to fit the engine if its not going to fit.

If you can weld, or has a friend who can weld, anything will fit anywhere.

You might have to make new engine supports to bolt the motor mounts to, and possible alter the cross member, that's really about it. The rest of the swap would be wiring, fuel lines, etc. I'm assuming you will be swapping in a transmission that mates with the new engine. Otherwise, you'd have to make an adaptor for that as well, and that can be difficult, trying to line up the centerlines of the crank and the input shaft.

I was more or less wondering if the firewall had to be modifyed? I could see moving the crossmember and motor mounts.
The engine that im looking at has the tranny+transfer case.

The available space in the engine compartments are different between the superduty and the older style trucks, but the old trucks have more space lengthwise, about 2" or thereabouts. So with more room available (not much more mind you), I don't see why you'd have to hack up your firewall.

I and a friend shoved a 460 into a 93 Explorer, what you're considering isn't *that* radical

I would measure just to be sure... the easiest way to verify is to measure the width between your inner fender wells and firewall to radiator, then visit your local Ford Dealer, and ask to measure an F250 or F350 superduty, and verify the differences. Then you'll have peace of mind!
