Issue with Tech Article (fuel filters)

...Just wanted to pass on my experience: Just got in from changing both frame and engine mounted fuel filters. The tech article posted on this site states to snap the frame mounted fuel filter into the cap then screw into the body. Not only do I think its not possible, but.... Prior to this I noticed that the frame mounted filter had a notch in it which told me that there was only one way that filter was going to be seated correctly in the body...also noted that the original filter had same notch. In addition, when taking out the old filter...the cap came off first (the old filter was still firmley seated into the body). This drove me to the conclusion that the filter must be inserted into the body first and seated correctly (by the notch) prior to screwing the cap on. Snapping the filter onto the cap first would not guarantee that the notch will line up and be seated correctly.

04 F250..if it makes a difference.

Everything else was spot on...engaged igition x3 then started...=no smoke...ran like a champ.

Thanks.

I haven't changed mine so I can't comment.

Anyone else who has, please chime in . . . .

...also a 1-3/8" socket fits more precisely than a 36mm...FWIW

Hmmm. That is the way it works on the oil filter. I changed my fuel filters and I do think you are correct. I will change it. I will add the part for the 1-3/8th socket as well.

With this kind of info we'll have this thing fine tuned.

The 1 3/8" socket info is interesting because 1 3/8 inches works out to be 34.925 mm so Ford must have made the casting for the nut a bit small.

Just curious, were you using a 6-point or 12-point socket when you did the filter change?

Aother helpful hint is the brakeline that is right in front of the filter can be easily moved out of the way. Just unclip it from by the filter, and then unclip it from a bracket about 10-12 inches back on the frame, and you can push it up and out of the way. It gives you much more room to fit your hand and filter in there so you don't have to squeeze it in there and get road grime on your nice new filter.

Thanks guys for the info

A big Thank you to all you guys I haven't changed mine yet but I was on my way to Sears tomorrow to get a 35 mm socket, I have a 1 3/8" socket so I'll just use it. That's why I love this site!

Take some aluminum foil or plastic wrap and lay it down over the frame just behind the HCFM before you insert the filter to keep the dirt off the filter.

I'll make sure that tip is in there too.

Changes have been made. Thanks for the tips. I looked up the procedure in the service manual. No mention of slots in the fuel filter.

...Its there...do you remember seeing it on yours? When I stuck it in I had to slowly turn it while applying slight pressure until it mated with (I'm guessing the slot) which allowed the filter to seat....because there is no way to do it visually. I actually did this three times because I wanted to be sure. The filter firmly dropped in an additional 1/2" (approximate) when I reached a certain point during the rotation of the filter.

Did you go out and check the 1-3/8" socket? I'm guessing the manual states 36mm and thats why you left it. I'm here to tell you that it is the proper size for the frame mounted filter cap. A 36mm will work but there is a little play in it.

Ford definitely states 36mm in their documentation. No I didn't check the 1-3/8". It has been a while since I changed the fuel filter. I am coming up on 27,000 and I am driving to Sarasota, Fl and back over the holidays. So I will be changing it soon. I will check it then.
