Before heading off to work this morning I put a caliper on the oil filter cap.

It measured 1.4125 inches which is 35.877 mm, about 5 thousands of an inch less than 36 mm.

I didn't have time, nor was I dressed right, to really crawl under the truck and do a good job of measuring the fuel filter cap, but my quick half hearted attempt yielded a reading of 1.405 inches with the caliper.

That works out to 35.687 mm or about 12 thousands of an inch less than 36 mm.

A 1 3/8 inch nut would work out to 1.375 inches or 34.925 mm. This would be 42 thousands of an inch less than 36 mm.

I don't have a 1 3/8 socket to try on the filter but I'm guessing that it would not work on my truck - an early '03.

AFAIK the caps on the HFCM and the oil filter housing are the exact same cap. They don't just take the same sized socket, they *are* the same cap.

My 36mm socket fits perfectly on my early '03, and I can't imagine why they'd change to inch-based sizes... if they were even going to change, which seems unlikely.
