My husband has been trying to fix the rear brakes in our 93 3.0 L. They aren't working at all. He's in the process of fixing the brake line and realized that he needs an adjuster kit. Problem is, he doesn't know where to put the cable adjuster on. He's new at doing brakes, and the auto shop wants to charge about $300 when the part only costs about $20. Also how do you properly bleed the brakes? Is it more difficult with ABS? Any info would help us out greatly.

 

Don't know about the cable adjuster, but there apparently is a trick to bleeding the brakes on a system with ABS. The best thing to do is to try to keep fluid in the reservoir as you're bleeding the rears so you don't suck any air into the lines between the master cylinder and the slave cylinder. The ABS mechanism is in there somewhere, and if you get air in it, it will be next to impossible to get it all out without using a special electronic jig that only Ford has. In that case, you WILL have to go to the dealer to get it done correctly.

no, it's not that. What happened was we bought the van a couple of months ago. We found out there was a leak in the brake line and the adjuster fell out from the shoes. My husband tried to fix the brake line himself but realized that the bolt to the wheel cylinder was rounded and couldn't get it out. So we took the van to the shop which they fixed the brake line and ended up putting in a new wheel cylinder ($200 dollars later). When they were there they noticed that the cable adjusters and cable guides were missing from both sides, I imagine that's why the adjsuter fell out. My husband said that he would fix it on his own since the parts only cost about $20 but now he's got to figure out how to put them back on. I imagine it's not hard but we don't want to overlook something that will cause damage later. Anybody have to put an adjuster kit on rear brakes that can tell us the process?

 

When I get home tonight, I'll post a picture of one side of the brake. The other side is similar. As for bleeding the brake, there is no special procedure for rear ABS. If you have both front and rear ABS, then it's difficult. I'll tell you all about it tonight.

As promised, I sent you the drawings of the LEFT rear brake. Note that what they call the "secondary" shoe is actually the heftier of the two, since it takes more load.

Yes, that's exactly what I was trying to post, but without success. It might be helpful if they see the other picture with the difference between the primary and secondary brake shoes. Otherwise, they may put them on backward. Also, how did you put the picture up? I'm semi-illiterate shen it comes to these things

 

not sure which pic you're referring to, but as far as getting the picture up, type IMG inside [] then the image address.

 

You guys are great. I'm sure my husband can figure out how to put the shoes back on as he was the one who replaced the ones before getting the safety certificate a couple months ago.
