Engine dieing

I had a problem with my truck (77 with an l6) started dieing every time gave some gas. The truck started again with no problems and the carb wasn't flooded. the the truck didn't start at all, and lucky for me I was but a block from the house. It was suggested the problem was the ignition coil, fuel pump or fuel filter all of which I have changed. While I have no doubt both of those were worthy of replacing sine they were the original and I know my truck has 400k miles on it. However none of those were my problem which I now believe is somewhere between the throttle shaft and the choke plate. If I shut the choke plate manually it will start up but as soon as it opens up it dies and doesn't close again. Is there an adjustment I can make some where first rather than taking the whole thing apart?

It sounds like the accelerator pump is bad. You probably ought to rebuild the carb.

I agree with Ford-Six. If the rest of the engine is sound. Find the most complete rebuild kit you can, the extra money will be worth it. Take your time and follow the directions to the letter. If you don't have a carb cleaner bath, find a shop that will let you use theirs to clean your carb body. Getting all those tiny bleed holes clean is the most important thing. And be sure to blow them out with low pressure air. Good luck.
