Rough Idle At Cold Start

I know that this probably has been discussed before, but when I started my '04 F250 6.0(after it had been sitting outside in 30 degree temperature), it smoked real bad and idled rough for a while . Is this a common problem on the '04's. I only have about 2100 miles on it.

Just when it first starts? How long does it take to level out? What color is the smoke?

It was blue smoke (oil burning I assume). This was my first really cold weather start. It ran rough (chugging) at first, but once I drove it for a little bit, then it would be fine.

My 05 with 6500 miles on it just started doing the same thing. I noticed it when the temps got down to 25 degrees. Doesn't do it while in the garge though. Blue smoke and it will barely drive until it cleans out. Going to the dealer soon.

04 250 PSD with 19k on it.

It's sat outside at work down to 10 degrees without being plugged in. ON start it idles a tad rough for the first 10 seconds, but no smoke.

03 6.0 Crewcab with 43,000 miles- Cold blooded, but always starts smooth in temps lower than 30.
SonicBlue, Have you done the first oil change? If not, do it. If you did, be certain it wasn't overfilled. Also, you might try some fuel additive. Good luck.

I just did my first oil change last night. I am using a fuel additive. How do you know if you overfilll the oil? What does it do?

Thanks

my 04 does a thing where it gives a shot of black smoke right after i hit the key and then for about the next 4 or 5 minutes it smokes bluish white...it is aout 20-25 degrees here in OHIO and it hasnt been plugged in yet...it idles like there is someone inside the motor wth a jackhammer whaling away...i mean it shakes the whole truck and it spits and farts and jumps and lets ya know its pretty cold...when i get ready o drive away, if i dont let the temp gauge come up to the first line, it will just about chug itself out...i pla on plugging it in tonite to see what happens...i also have a question, how far up does the temp gauge go if i plug it in for 3-4 hours?...thanks

Try some fuel additive! Power Service in the gray bottle or order Stanadyne Performance Formula off the internet.
