I tried using search but couldnt find what I was looking - sorry if bring up a typical "newbie" question....
Heres what I have...
91 Ranger (4x2) Auto, picked up a thumping sound in cooling sys..
Sounds like water surging in system - now this has been going on for sometime, but, I have replaced Radiator, Cap, Fan Belt, Hoses and Tstat. Still Thumps.
Seems like the one Rad Hose gets warm as normal but the other is still cold??.
I hope I explained well enough... thanks in advance for any replies.
I'd first make sure all air was purged from the cooling system. Parking with the front end up a bit helps. I also have to wonder if you're having a water pump problem. What is the temperature gauge looking like?
BTW, what engine?

Update: forgot..
I also did a waterpump and heater core... Tried 2 TStats
only thumps when on HEAT not COOL.
After 5 - 10 min running - Heater hoses are hot & the upper rad hose is just warm...
Are you certain the thermostat is installed correctly, the coiled bimetal part, toward the engine & the thermostat air bleed valve UP.
This air bleed valve is important to help the 4.0L burp air out of the system.
Also with the vehicle parked with the front end elevated as Bill suggested, put the system in defrost & the heat control **** to "RED", max heat.
With the vehicle cold, remove the radiator cap, start the engine, let it warm up until the thermostat opens & the upper hose gets hot, but don't rev it.
Watch the coolant level in the radiator & top it off as the air is expelled.
When the coolant stops foaming, top the radiator up to the over flow, replace the radiator cap, top off the recovery tank to it's "Full Hot" mark & watch it's level for a few days, adding a 50/50 mix as needed.
This proceedure should successfully burp the system for you, it has for me.
