Thump,thump,thump.....

Well from my other thread this morning...https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...f-go-ford.html......
Since the hard brake check, I now have a slight, rhythmic "thump" that increases and descreases in speed as the truck does. It sounds like it is coming from the front end...maybe the center under the driveline hump towards the front. It seems to decrease a little as I first start to accellerate and as I get faster, it seems to get a little less...although I am putting that to it going faster and not hearing it as much. Now when the brakes really locked up, at one point the front wheels were locked and "hopping" just before I came to a full stop.

Well I went to lunch and the "thump" is still there....doesn't seem to affect the way it drives....turning...braking....just the noise there. If it is a flat spot...how long will it take to clear up? If not...what could it be?

Thanks!

I have no clue what hard braking could have disrupted, but your symptoms sound similar to when I had a bad u-joint where the driveshaft meets the pig. Worth looking into, but perhaps you flat spotted your tires? I did that to my rears, and when the flat spots aligned there was one hell of a thump going on... lesser but faster when they were off sync.

Come to think of it, I'd lobby towards flat spots before u-joint.

Should have read your last portion before posting lol, if you flat spotted them bad it will never go away... you can try doing an epic burnout with them on the rears. Shouldn't your truck have ABS though?

I flatspotted my Toyo Open Country M/T's about 9 inches long and about a quarter inch at the deepest when they were almost brand new, 40K later the flat spot is still evident and I can still feel it. I have done plenty of burn outs as well.

Well it supposedly has ABS, and at times under a little more than normal braking, if they do go to lock from hitting a bump, ABS will kick in, but I was with both feet on the brake pedal mashing the hell out of it. So they just locked up.

Now as for the burnout...Ummmm with the front end?

tire rotation! if you have manual lockers, leave them unlocked put her in 4 lo and gas it... you'll make a pretty sweet cloud. However, thats only going to fix them if its a small flat spot! but if you need new tires... i guess it's getting your money's worth!

Nope...unfortunately, I don't have the manual. Ugh...my neighbor does....maybe he wants to play a little. I wonder if I can pass this off through my insurance company...I only have a $100 deductible.

Jack up the front end and spin the tires, the flat spot should be obvious. Otherwise, there's something else going on - are your hubs locked? Or are the needle bearings shot?

I am hoping it isn't the needle bearings.....not changeable. Have to replace the whole damn hub assembly and those price out at $600 each side. Hubs were in "auto" and still are. They bounced hard enough that is almost knocked off the center cap off the front passenger wheel.

You'll be very impressed with the quality of an $89 used ebay hub... i got about 15K on mine and it's doing great! hell, you can even buy them in pairs around $200... still cheaper than 1 autozone or ford part, and once you change one once and load up with the anti seize its about an hour job!!!!

I may have to take a vacation then....the truck and my bike are my only transpo back and forth to work. My wife needs her car for her job... Maybe I will start looking for the hub/bearing assembly then on ebay.

They ARE changeable - National/Fed-Mogul B-2110 - unless the '99 is something different?

Rotate your tires and see if the bump moves. Do you feel any vibration in the steering?

sounds like flat spot on tires, happen to me one time in my wife's car, since it was the front and we were on vacation I rotated the tires to the back and drove the rest of the way to our destination then got two new tires.

Take it to a reputable tire store and have them true the tires. It actually grinds off the rest of the tire to even it out sort of like a big lathe. Takes some of the tire tread but then again it will never wear even like it is. Just tell em not to go overboard and take em down to the point you need new tires.
