I just returned a new 2004 f-150 for service with 2000 miles. It's down 1 quart of oil with no apparent or visable leaks. Anyone have any ideas and should I be as concerned as I AM. Thanks for all replies.
Joeyd...first off, you must have had to check the dipstick when you first bought it, right? And then compared it with another check before bringing it in? Just trying to make sure it was properly serviced in the first place.
Secondly, with only 2k on the engine, there is alot going on as far as break-in. I would not be overly concerned at this point, because rings are still trying to seat, etc. Personally, I think it 's a good idea to change oil early, but that's up to everyone's own way thinking.
Give the engine some time for break-in, and the oil loss should start tapering off around 8-10k (maybe even longer). I'm sure you'll get many other opinions on this subject, though!!
Just had the truck in to the dealer ( a company truck) and my shop manager told me that dealer service stated that it is completely acceptable for the new Ford's to use 1 quart of oil every 1200 -1500 miles. Keep filling it up. Any help or comments.
I got the new truck back yesterday and the service dept. gave me a copy of Ford paperwork where it states that the loss of a quart of oil is acceptable and can be expected in the new Fords. Never heard of such a thing, maybe in the breakin period.
Just changed my oil after 3k miles, very hard driving. It had a small rear seal leak, which stopped at about 800 miles. Total use about .4 quart in 3k. That would be normal. 1200 miles to the quart would not.
