Tranny question
Hi. I need some advice on my '86 F-150 300-6cyl. My manual transmission has bit the dust, according to my machanic (there are bits of metal in the Fluid). Mine is a four speed with the granny gear, no overdive. My mechanic said the trannys for my truck are getting hard to find, and wants 1,400.00 to replace. (I'm in FL.) I'm having trouble looking for trannys because I don't know what one I have (is it a c4, c6, r2d2,?)
What kind of tranny is it?
Does 1,400.00 sound right?
What are my options?

You more than likely have a T-18 or an NP 435 tranny. Does this mechanic have a helper named "Tony no thumbs"? $1400 seems like extortion to me. Parts for these trucks can be found in any junkyard in the U.S.A. You could get your tranny rebuilt for less than that, if you look around. Look around for a better price.

you should be able to put a diff transmission in in place of the existing one with no real problems....just drop one, swap your crossmember out, and transfer case if you have it, and put the new set-up back in...shouldn't be too hard...just my opinion...
