Air Compressor Opportunity
Air Compressor Opportunity
I have an opportunity to buy a "scratch and dent" Campbell Hausfeld Compressor 7.0HP, 13.5 SFCM @ 90PSI 60 gallon, oil recevoir, belt drive, 100% duty cycle for 400 cash. No tax, nothing. It sells new for $637 at Lowes plus tax and delivery.
Is this a good deal? Should I get it?
The only damage I have seen upon inspection is some of the cylinder cooling fins are broken off the top of the cylinders. Not too many and only from the ends. Looks like it might have had some stuff hit it in the warehouse. It has never been owned or run. The seller is offerring a full one year warranty. This would save me almost 300 dollars but I dont wanna get something that wont last either. It is going in a home shop and will not really ever have to run full duty cycle.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

If you need one, go for it. Take it home and run it and run it and run it. Make sure it will work. You have a year warranty. But if you don't use it much you won't know if it is ok, so run it for a while. Crack the drain valve just a little so it won't hit enough pressure to shut off. Give it a good test. If it holds together you have a good deal. Good luck with it.
check to see if the compressor turns over easy by hand. find out what a new head is going to cost. that compressor took a good whapping to break off the fins. find out if you can test it there or bring it back. run the compressor with the outlet open for a minimum of 40 minutes, close the valve and let it build pressure and shut off. drain tank and repeat just the build up of pressure. then cycle the compressor between start-up and shut off pressure, each time making sure the pressures are the same.
I would try to beat them up on price if you can.
if it is the one pictured below, the compressor may have damaged air lines that go to the tank. if thats the case put bubbles on them and check for leaks.

yes that compressor has three cyliders. it not that great of a deal, considering I paid $200 for my IngersolRand, that had less damage. Just the air filter housing was smashed. IMO, I would try to get it for half of retail or less, the damage to it could lead to problems down the road. if it was just minor cosmetics/ paint damage it would be a good deal.
