The main issue why the stock box is that it does seat properly, thus the issue with dust. That can be easily fixed, by disconnecting the intake hose to the box top. Seat the top over the filer properly and clamp it down. Then attach the intake hose and tighten. The hose seem to exert extra forces, an causes a slight mis-seating issue, that allows air to be ingested around the filter.
In any case, its best to get a round filter that clamps to the inatke hose to the turbo and elimintae any guess work. Make sure when you do so to minimize the amount of hot air from the engine coming to the filter so you can gain lower EGT's. These engine get very hot, and living in a climate like mine, every deg drop I can get helps my EGT's.
The bigger surface area of any of these filters is a plus over the stock setup. The FORD AIS is a really nice system, though I question the cost of the replacement filter, as it is a little too high. The AFE Stage II seems to be the best out there, from filterartion and cold air setup, although the initial cost is high.
Wildbill, I agree about the temperature thing, every little bit must help. Just like back in my gasser days, we ran a cool can at the strip and it lowered our E.T. 2 10th's. A "Cool Can" by the way, is just a can filled with ice that has the fuel line coiled through. But, my understanding was that cooler air or fuel is denser and therefore more can be packed into the engine resulting in more power.
I looked at the AFE Stage 2, Part # PDQ-50-10272 for my truck ('97). It looks very nice, but I can't really see a good picture of it. You mention that it does have a cold air set up? How do they do that? I guess what I'm asking is how does the AFE differ from the Tymar or Kwik's setup other than it looks cooler and has a heatsheild. Does the actual element used by AFE flow as much as the Donaldson and does "cold air setup" just refer to the heatsheild or are they bringing in cold air from the grill like the factory does?
Ok sitting at a light or going slow the filter is going to see alot warmer air but once your going I can't see it being that bad the original fresh air intake is blow straight at it. It would be interesting to see what the underhood temps really are.
I am not sure what the AFE Stage II setup looks like for the 97, but on the 99-up it has a whole tray for the battery and a shield, so the heat form the engine is isolated.
I wish I could find the article someone wrote on the temp differences in the engine compartment. Anyhow, on the 99-up the pcm monitors the intake temp, which has something to do with fuel mapping.

I didnt say the tymar, i said paper filters. From what I've seen when it comes to drag racing a k&n (when taken care of, not just thrown on and never oiled) will clean better, test have been done. No changing my mind, i'm happy with mine.
