I found an adaptor on accident for a ford aod for an fe. there is also one for some chevy tranny, but who cares bout that.. haha.... any way here is the site, its part #56fe its closer to the bottom... http://www.transmissioncenter.net/AOD.htm
Anyone done this conversion or know anything about the product..??
Looks Expensive I would install the correct transmission beefed up. Unless you have alot of horse power and need this to be installed. Ansewer to question: Adaptors do work
I dont know if i would be the gunei pig as of yet, I still need to get my engine running right before i mess with anything else. I was just happy to finally find a conversion... everyone said there was one and to search the forums, but when i did all i found was.. " I've heard theres ones out there, but you have to search the forums" HAHA.... Anyway i just typed in fe conversions on google and that came up. I was surprised. But yes, i would eventually like to have an aod. Does anyone else know of anything thats cheaper? I know if gear vendors, but they are like 2500... So i guess my real questions is, if everyone thinks this is expensive, does anyone know of a cheaper adaptor, or anything you can do.
I'm hoping to hear about tranny conversions and not rear ends and the other famous words "keep your foot off the gas" haha... Im asking about tranny's, would like to hear about Overdrives for cheaper or adaptors for cheaper.
I have one behind my hi po 390, 8000 mile so far. Tranny is from Lentech, whole thing with their adapter and torque converter and Lokar cable, set me back 3K. If I had a beefed up C6 to begin with I would do the Gear Vendors, but since I still had stock Fordamatic and wanted to cruise 75MPH at 2200 rpm I went with AOD. There should be lots of threads on this both in the FE and Transmission forums as well as here.

I'm afraid that FE MPG isn't going to improve much unless you build the engine specifically towards that end, keep stock rear gears or higher, and plan your life around never driving into headwinds, etc.
I do however get an honest 10 mpg on trips. With bigger valves, 4 bbl, etc. About what I got with my stock 2bbl 352. I didn't plan the AOD for that reason, but wanted to keep the rpm's down on the Interstate. It also allowed me to change rear gear to 3.55. I have too much of a Lead Foot to win any MPG awards, in anything.
Trevor, Nice looking truck, I do however wonder what your tail pipes look like. Are they black & sootie? You should get 10 mpg or more with a direct drive tranny. I was only getting 10 mpg on my truck with a Edelbrock 1406. We reduced the jet & metering rod sizes and now am approaching 15.
I would think with overdrive you should be looking for 18 mpg.
In my younger days I had a 77 f150 with a 390 2v out of a 70 galaxie. I was running a three speed manual. I installed a four speed OD manual from a small block Granada. It took about two weeks for the noises to get bad and about a month for total failure. Truck was running almost 20 mpg with the OD, and could cruise way faster than realized on the highway. It was a cheap overdrive conversion. Got what I paid for (everything was surplus so I may of still come out ahead).
How do you reduce your jet and metering rod sizes, nothing i have ever done.... sounds like something i want to do. I have the same edelbrock 1406 as you.

Yeah mine are just a little rich looking-but not that much, I have a Holley Avenger 670cfm, with EDelbrock heads that have the larger valves.
I remember some threads about MPG from a while back in the FE forum and I don't recall anyone claiming to get anything like what you guys are getting. You do have FE motors right? I don't seem to be able to keep my foot out of it so I haven't really been worried about that part.
I've had a couple of 390 powered trucks. my old one was 1970 F-100 LWB 2wd with a non stock 390, it got 9.5 mpg on the freeway just cruising at 65 mph, and it had a 3.25 rearend, c6 tranny. You can imagine what it git when I actually used my lead foot, you could watch the fuel gauge needle move. The truck I have now, 1972 F-100 SWB, c6, 3.86 rearend, 390 GT, gets about 11 MPG freeway at 65.
I'd be happy to get 15mpg, but it's unrealistic with the way I drive. But if I wanted fuel mileage, I'd have gotten a truck with a straight 6 and o/d. I've seen the 300 w/od get 20 mpg, and they still have pretty good torque towing ability.
