what can I expect to pay for a tune up? I wonder if I should but the plugs and wires to make sure I get quality replacements. also, I have heard that they often will skip the rear plugs all together. how can I ensure that mine ACTUALLY get changed?

I've got a '91 and a '93 that I've put the plugs in and space is at a
premium. Both of mine have the 3.0 however. For me, the driver's side
plugs go in from the front, the front two passenger side plugs go in from
the wheel well, (take off the tire) and the passenger side back plug goes
in from underneath. (Somebody else may have a better way)
About the only way to ensure that they replaced them is to inspect their
work after you get it back. It might be a good time to replace the wires on your van also. About a year ago one of my vans had a miss whenever it rained or humidity got high and a new set of wires cured it.
Wait why they working on your van, a local shop is better than a franchise. I tols them I pay an extra half hour for the plug change. Ask them to see the old 6 plugs.
I use Autolite platinum and Motorcraft wire set. Since I am the third owner of my van, I order a major tune up:
Changing air filter, shocks, Oil, PS & Trany & transfer case to Synthetics fluids, Add on Trany cooler, line filter, flush radiator. In all it cost me $1k. Hopefully that it will last me for a long time.
If you hire it out, anywhere between $500~$1000. I do it myself for under $100 in parts. I do recommend using the Motorcraft wires. Those premium super brands are not worth the effort.
