need transmision advice

1990 Bronco 302, AOD transmision

I am probably going to replace my transmision in the near future, since it is slipping. I was figuring on removing and installing it myself since I have access to a shop. I was thinking I would buy a rebuilt one or have mine rebuilt.
My engine is stock and I don't do much offroading, but is there any beefing up that I should have done to the rebuilt transmision when they rebuild it?
I was wanting to have it so that it won't shift out of overdrive so easily.
Should I replace the torque converter at the same time and if so any advice on what to buy?
Anything else that I should replace or do while I have it off?
Is there any maintenece that I should do to the transfer case since I will have it off also?

Have any of y'all had any experience with Aamco? Are they very reliable?
What would be a resoanable price to have someone rebuild mine or buy a rebuilt one, if I do all of the removal and instalation?

Thanks A lot, everyone

The AOD has a very good service record in stock form. There may be minor changes that were made but 1990 marked nearly the last of the models to be equipped with this automatic, so not much more was beefed up or improved by Ford since yours was built. There are aftermarket shift kits available for them. I have no experience with them so I can't advise as to how well they work or what improvements could be seen by installing one.

As to the TC, they are pretty hard to kill. As long as the pump hasn't failed and allowed it to overheat, it should be fine.

If there are any updates that Ford made after yours was built, Ford should be able to tell you based on the model year and possibly some information from the transmission itself whether there are any Ford factory "updates" for it. If there are any, definitely have them installed. (The E4OD benefits greatly from the late 94 shift-improvement updates that are available for pre-94 units that undergo a rebuild).

The T-case could probably stand to have the gear oil replaced. There is no filter and its a drain/refill procedure.

Hope this helps.
