I have a "93" Ford Explorer , The drivers side upper door hinge is bad and I need to replace it. The hinge has 2 bolts that mount to the door jam and , the upper bolt is permanently attached to the hinge (part of it), now this bolt on the inside of the jam you place a nut on it , while the second bolt is a standard type you bolt through the hinge to the body.I have the new hinge but even with the use of the Haynes repair Manual I can't for the life of me find the first bolt's nut behind the door jam. All the manual states is to remove the nut but doesnt say whether I need to take apart a section of the dash or if there is an access panel to be able to get behind the pillar. If anyone could possibly come up with an answer to this please let me know. Winter is coming and I was hoping to get this repaired before the snow arrives..Thanx in advanced
Well guess being a newbie has its delimas aswell, and I finally found my answer in previous post's. At this time I can't recall who it was, a couple of people had said to go to AutoZone and look in the help section of the store for an F150 style hinge pin and bushings replacement kit. Cut the old door pins out and replace them that way, instead of taking apart the dash to get to that one bolt Ford seems to want to hide deep in the belly of the vehicle, just to remove one hinge...Hmmmm . think theres a reason for that?..anyhow, its fixed now and not a day to late the snow is on the ground , or starting. Even if it did take me awhile to find an answer, I think I found a new home, my truck thank's you all aswell. It's starting to feel better.
Welcome to FTE, Syncback.
Sorry no one answered your post. As you found out, it's easier to replace the pins and bushings rather than the hinges. Glad you got it fixed.
I haven't had to access the bolt you mentioned, but maybe it's behind the kick-panel, and removed by reaching up through a hole behind there...???
Many years ago, before the threads were posted on this forum about the hinges, I replaced both hinges on my '91 Ex. You can get to the nuts on the top hinge but it is difficult. IIRC correctly, it required removing a metal brace under the dash, the kick panel and using some universal joints and extensions with the socket wrench. Fortunately, if you drop the nut, and you will, you can retrieve it from the hole for the accessing the bottom hinge. If I had to do it over again I would probably try replacing the hinge pin as described above.
No, every place I looked for information refers to having to take apart the dash to access it. I've tryed the kick panel and reaching up under the dash plus seeing if there was an access panel on the firewall, but to no success. The Hanyes manual states to "remove the top and bottom hinge access cover plates, on models so equipped" but I guess mine wasn't "So Equipped"..laffs. anyhow thanx for your reply.
Im in the same boat...without a paddle! RE: Upper drivers side hinge 1991 Explorer 4-dr.
Thanx to this thread I was able to find where the "nut" is . I felt around and had to cut some sound insullation off ,and can see my problem . Its not a nut that can be removed by a standard socket. Seems Robo-Tron did this at the factory and is a permenate part of the body. Does anyone know whad I'm talkin about here???? The head of the bolt that goes through the hinge and the body [outside door jam] is flat. The new hinge i picked up at Ford has an adjustable bolt with a nut on it.
