I have a 01 psd with the automatic tranny (4r100 I believe) My situation is when I am traveling at highway speeds (60 to 70 mph) and I give my truck gas causing it to downshift it drops down into what I believe is third gear. At this point the RPM's are entirely to high. Shorty after this it shifts again to what is 4th, RPM's are at a good level here with good power. Next the transmission will make it's final shift into 5th or OD.
My question, is there a way to get the transmission to shift into fourth without going all the way down to third, first? Thanks for everyone time in responding as I have searched with no luck. Titan
I have tried using the O/D off button, it just drops it to third and then will hold in fourth. I would like to go directly to fourth in mechanically possible......

hmm, mine is auto and I have to put it to the floor to make it downshift. And the
4r100 is a 4 speed. Kinda sounds like it is dropping to 2nd? And really it shouldn't downshift into 3rd unless you either: 1 put the pedal down all the way or 2. you
are pulling up a grade that it has to stay out of od. yeah od off just wont let it get
past third, and if yur truck has this prnd321 then you could but i doubt it does.
If it did you could drop it into 3rd, but why?
Maybe I do not have a 4r100 then. I know it is not going into second. If I start at zero and accelerate hard, I get four distinct shift points which I assume is five gears.... Is this basically correct. Titan

If you were to press the pedal slowly instead of mashing it you will get the torque converter to unlock, which won't raise the engine speed as much as going to third gear.
You do have a 4R100 four speed automatic with a lockup torque converter. When the converter locks it feels like another shift. The five speed auto (TorqShift) came out in 2003 with the 6.0L PSD.
Got it, thanks for the quick responses. Is there anything that can be done to improve the performance of the converter to limit the time needed to unlock.
Stop in at your dealer, might see if they can reprogram your PCM for your tranny. I did that to mine, made a big difference in shifts. Mine was the same way, felt like a 5 speed with the T/C lockup, after I got it reprogrammed, it improved a lot. Might cost around $30 or a little more, but I think it's worth it.
Another thing to improve the shifts is put in a Sonnax valve and Tricummulator springs. Will firm up your shifts and help the transmission out overall.
I have an 01 7.3 PSD and am having the same issues here. What are the usual costs for the Sonnax valve and Tricummulator springs? Who can do the install of these items, stealership, transmission shop,?? What will I be shelling out to get these mods done? Is it really worth the cost. Will these work with the Superchips Microtuner or Diablo Predator tuners? Still saving up for an exhaust, but may want to put this on my wish list too.
Have you guys considered purchasing a chip/tuner for extra power? Most people claim that chips/tuners prevent their trucks from downshift as much when towing.
The sonnax valve and springs cost around $50, and you can do the install yourself. It's pretty simple once you get it done, it just takes time, right at 2 hours for me. And be sure to have tranny fluid on hand, since you have to drain it to put the kit in. I got mine from Diesel Innovations, I think you can get the same setup else where. I think it's well worth the cost and yes, it will work with a superchip tuner or diablo tuner. I'm not sure if either of those do it, but I think they would, increase the line pressure in the valve body, same thing as the sonnax valve. I have both the shift kit and a custom flip chip that increased the line pressure, and it shifts hard now!
The claim that a chip or tuner helps to keep the truck from downshifting when pulling is true, in a way. They provide more power, resulting in more lugging ability of the truck and so it'll lug harder before it down shifts. Then if it does downshift, hang on cuz the truck will definitely gain speed and then some!
Have chip, exhaust, and intake already, the TC hangup it still very obvious as if it is a 5 speed.
FarmbOy when you say reprogram the PCM, it that the same function that I have available to me when I use my diable predator to adjust the shift pressure?

No, this is beyond a aftermarket programmer, it was something the dealer did with their computer. Even put a sticker under the hood saying the PCM was reprogrammed. I think it's an update to the current program, don't know if your's needs it, but take it in to find out. He'll plug it in and it'll give you a list of stuff it will change, and a lot of the stuff it listed I was having problems with, as you are too.
