Taking apart a 300 tonight and i figured out what was wrong. Look at the pics in my gallery under 300 and see if you can tell whats wrong. Haven't got the oil pan off yet I got mad after I forgot to drain the oil and turned the motor over so I quit for the night.
Holy Schmoly --- That was the end of that block. Did it still run or sieze up instantly? Was it just a sudden blow out, or did you have some sort of sign that it was in the process of departing?
There is clearly a hole in the cylinder wall in the one view. And it looks like one of the pistons is cored out in another. Ughhhh...
deffinatly oil and coolant mix, looks like it kept running for a little while, probably stuck the bottom end after a while, - looks pricy, I'd be looking for a replacment.
Hydro lock in a cylinder? or is the rod broken in the holed cyl?
The engine was still running when removed but it made some awful noises. Notice those are dished pistons and the one is turned sideways. Also the lifter is in the oil pan. After i dumped oil all over my garage I stopped but will remove the oil pan tomorrow and post pics of the rod and cam. The funny thing is the piston looks like crap but the head looked to be alright.
Let me get this stright -- that was the #5 cylinder, the cam chaft busted there too? I don't understand why. and moveover, how did that engine keep running, even sort of, through all that? 6 must have been out as well, as there was nothing running the valves, right?
Cyl 5 is where the cam broke so cyl 6 was not working either. I don't know how it kept running but it did. Why the cam was busted my guess is the crank slamed the bottm part of the rod into it and it busted. I have not seen anything this bad on a motor before the crank did not break but it is hammered up real good. This is the first time I've ever even heard of a cylinder coming apart.
Not good when "Mud" comes out of the engine and you ahve not been in the mud! And Its not good when more than one part comes out in " more than one part"!
Me and my brother bought the truck to fix and sell. We are going to give it to our little brother. So I don't know the history of the motor and we bought it knowing that it needed a motor so we are not out anything. All we got to do was to drive it around the block a few times. But the good news is the motor came with a new fuel pump, clutch and pressure plate and we had a extra 300ci sitting around. I did notice when taking it apart that one of the rod bolts looked real loose.
Holy smoking crap! I've seen some blown engines in my time, but that one is the second worst I've ever seen. And it ran!?
Edit, after some thought, I can see how it might run, dist drives off cam between three and four, if those two cylinders were completly down, you have a four cyl engine.
The worst? Let's put it this way, V8 Pontiac 400, took the carb off, looked down the intake, and saw the shop floor.
That's the worst failure I've ever seen in a 300. A friend of mine once punched a rod out the side of his Chevy 350; but, it didn't break up near as bad as your 300.
Hard to belive that it still ran - RNE is right, you basically made a 4 cyl out of your 6.
ohhhh ooooooooh pick me! i know why it still ran! Its an I6 lol no really thats pretty bad dude i know these engines can take a beatin but that pretty tough
