Well, I went to start up the beast today, and all I hear it a constant high speed clicking sound coming from the solenoid area when the ignition is on. Is this a bad solenoid or is there a bad connection somewhere. Can I bypass the solenoid and run the power cable direclty into the starter?
I've heard that sound often. It's usually caused by a weak battery or could be a bad battery/starter cable connection. The battery has enough power to pull in the solenoid but when the current flows to the starter the battery voltage drops causing the solenoid to drop out so with no current to the starter the battery voltage goes back up and the solenoid pulls in again and the cycle repeats. Charge the battery and clean all connections including the ground from the battery to the starter.
You can temporarily "jump" the solonoid and that will crank the starter over. Do what is suggested above. You can't eliminate the solonoid and directly commect the battery to the solonoid. It will make the starter run all the time.
You might try jump starting it from a known good battery with jumper cables. If it starts ok, then it's probably a weak battery. The exception is if the vehicle has been sitting for some time or you think there might be a drain on the battery. I used to limp along with older batteries in vehicles, trying to get the most out of them. Anymore, first time they let me down I get a new one. They aren't that expensive. It doesn't pay to hassle with them. If that isn't it follow Barry or dmptrkr's suggestions.
I recently moved (4 mos. ago) and it started fine when I moved. Since then, I have not messed around with it, it's a restoration project for sure, and I tried the jumper cables on it off the bat cause I knew the battery would be dead... it goes clickclickclickclickclickclick. I am going to take the battery down to autozone and have them check it to make sure it's not bad, and get some new power terminals and cables, maybe i'll get lucky.
