Is anyone else using a Ford mini starter (required with 'tight fit' or 'block hugger' headers) that has a solenoid on the starter in a truck that also has the 'old style' fire wall mounted solenoid??
If so, I could use some help with how to wire that setup. I did it the same way I used to wire my 'non-ford' stock cars that had the starter mounted solenoid but it doesn't seem to work the same with the ford starters - I've had three starter solenoids go bad......
I recently wired my 56 with components like you describe, but it is in a storage unit 750 miles from here. Once I get relocated and the PC reconnected, I can scan the wiring diagram that came with the Ford Motorsport starter. I seem to remember that one wire goes from the battery to the starter relay and then from that terminal to the starter solenoid. The opposite starter relay terminal goes to the solenoid small connector. The starter cable is hot all the time and only when the signal goes from the relay to the solenoid does the starter engage. I know, not a good enough description, but I can't access my wiring diagrams for until around the end of next month.
I recently in stalled one on my 351W. main(positive) cable to the large stud and start wire from ignition switch to solenoid. I'm using MSD6 ignition, so mine is real easy.
That's how I had it wired but the starters (three so far) keep 'breaking' after several uses. (they just spin freely and won't turn the engine over). If I bench test them, the gear is popping out but they won't turn the engine over.
