A\C Compressor\clutch cycles when heat is on

In February I bought a '95 Ranger 3.0 XLT (2wd LB). When it started to get warm, I recharged the A\C (it seems like it had been a while since it had been charged) Now, if you're from Indiana, or have been here, then you know that it can be 90 degrees one day and then 50 degrees the next. The past couple of nights I have had to use my heat. This is the weirdest problem I have ever had with a Ford. On every setting except for "Floor", the A\C clutch kicks in, even when the heat control is all the way in the red. I won't be able to keep this up with the gas prices, because that compressor guzzles gas. I'm really needing some help on this one! Thanks in advance!

They are designed like this to keep the windshield from getting fogged when you run defrost

I have cut the wire to the compressor cluch and installed a switch in the cab to disable the compressor whenever I don't wabt it, and can also turn it on if I need it. I did this because I got tired of the windshield freezing up and having to turn the heat on to thaw it in the 90 degree weather. I guess I got tired of unplugging/pluging in the compressor clutch.
