I have a 93 4.0 extended with AWD. The car has the rear A/C system.
When the engine is running the compressor clutchn seems to always be engaged, even when the main control is not on A/C or Max A/C, and the temp is set to heat. I say always, because this afternoon I saw the A/C clutch disengage for about 10 sec. before it kicked in again.
Is this normal? Or, are the controls set improperly? Or, is there something wront?
The A/C compressor should run when set to A/C, MAX A/C, or defrost. The A/C runs in defrost to de-humidify the air to better clear the windshield. This is independent of the temp setting. You can run the A/C with the temp up high and get hot air.
My wife (some years ago) thought that MAX meant just MAX. Since it was real cold she put it on MAX and turned the temp to high. It was fine up front but she froze everyone in the back. They got A/C out the top vents.
