I'd keep 4speed on the payroll. He does good work.

I played with the idea of putting a midbass speaker there in the back corner, but am waiting to see if it is necessary for my system first. Can you tell me how large of a speaker you can mount there? Including a maximum grill outside diameter measurement.

Excellent topic. Just wondering what would be some other good places to install speakers rather than the stock locations I.E. door panels, kick panels ect...on a "56" stock at the moment project? Thanks

I am using a Polk model ex352 5 1/4 speaker. The O.D. of the grill ring is 6 inches and the magnet is 2 1/2 inches from the speaker mounting surface.

I sunk the speaker mounting surface in 1/2 inch so that maybe I will stop knocking the grill off. So if you mounted it on the surface you could gain approx 1/2 in depth.

I wanted to follow the line of the lower support brace so that I could weld it along the brace and plug weld it to the door opening inner frame (the box continues 1 inch behind the opening frame) and it hopefully will be easier to upholster that area. A larger speaker might force the box to pivot more towards the front and will protrude into to the cab.

The front speakers are Polk 6 1/2 and they are also sunk in the door a 1/2

The audio system was bought approx 4 yrs ago so I'm sure it's behind the times but thats ok. I just would like to hear the radio over my exhaust system maybe I can this time sense it will be insulated.

Do you think a 6 1/2 OD could go in there? That is kind of a good size for a midbase driver.

And I really wish everyone would not apologize for their equipment. Polk audio is one of the more respected mainstream brands anyway.

And I also wish it was OK to state a $300 head unit is much better than a $150 unit here without fear of offending someone. If you do shop intelligently, should it not be expected that more expensive things might be higher quality than cheaper things? I thought that's how it generally works in this country. I also happen to think a lot of well marketed audio equipment does not offer the sound quality you get charged for. I am fairly well informed. I should be courteous here. That said, am I not doing a disservice if I start an audio thread and blow smoke up everyones rearend so my friends will feel all warm and fuzzy.

I frequently spend my money based on advice I get on FTE. I would hope people give me the facts as they know them. A lot of folks have not purchased their stereo yet. And some of those guys are reading this. Niolon is one of them. You know he is gonna screw this up and have to do three or four stereo installs I'm not truthful.

And that isn't directed at you or anyone in particular Chuck. It's more of a mass assault on everybody here with a $100 CD player and $35 speakers. If you like em, I think that's just wonderful. But I'm not going to pretend you can't do quite a bit better if you choose to spend a little more cash. I'll be gentle, but options for different budget levels is what we need to provide here. Right????

My 6 1/2 inch speaker grill mounting ring has a O.D. of 7.0 inches and the magnet is 3 inches from the mounting surface, so if you mount it on the surface and make the mounting face about an inch wider you may have a chance.

The only bad thing if you continue mounting it the same way I am the curve on the back corner is starting to close in on the available magnet space.

I will make up a plywood templete this afternoon just to see if there is room and take a couple of pictures, then maybe 4speed will post them for me?

Thats ok I only meant that the way electronics are they seem to be obsoleted before you get them home and to be honest I do prefer the sound of a well tune engine with a nice deep sounding exhaust over most of todays music.

I actually prefer the sound of a dentist drill, or stray dogs knocking over my trash cans to a lot of today's music.

And I'm sure 4speed will post PICs for you, or you can email it to any of us. I was afraid I would be right into the back of the seat with a 6" speaker.

All right made the plywood approx 8 inches wide and at the short end about 9 inches tall my speaker grill attachment ring is about 7 inches O.D..

It seems to have about 1/2 clearance at the back edge and the speaker is mounted to what would be the outside surface.

The pic are in door mods last two pic.

Would have E-Mailed but can't seem to attach anything. Guess I need to join.

I believe this shows the magnet in relation to the rear corners?

Chuck and 4Speed

Thank you, this is exactly what this thread is for. I wrote off this location as unacceptable for a 6 1/2" midbasewoofer a year ago. Your Polk is 3" deep measured from the back of the mounting face to the magnet? A little over 3" deep if you sat the speaker on a table? I hope so, because many quality speakers are available that are even a little shallower than your Polk.

Yes it is approx 3 inches from the magnet to the mounting surface and if you set it on a table add about 3/16.

You could gain a little more clearance if you moved it closer to the door opening flange.

And again thank you 4speed.

Here is my center dash mounted Sony

Sorry about the flash! Also, the pic makes the ac vent and cd player look unlevel but they are. I was kinda kinked over trying to get a good pic and obviously failed miserably

Austin is a high tech center so we have numerous companies that sell plastic. I looked in the yellow pages and made some calls. A 4x8 foot sheet runs $32. Made my kicks from scraps they had lying around. They charged me 8$ plus tax.
