Trying to figure out my 79 Bronco's T-case.It is a NP203,and I added a Mile Marker 4 to 2wd conversion kit,but my question is on my shifter **** it say's 4low/4low lock-N-4high/4high lock.In the snow 4low or high suck's in the snow, but the 4 low-high lock work's awsome. In a straight line in lock position it will fly"BUT" do not try to stop or turn.Actualy in 4wd it don't like to stop or steer in any of the option's of the T-case.How does this design work when it was new 250K ago??What lock's.Ive alway's used, and still use NP 205's other then the Bronco.
it used to be a full time case, after the conversion it is considered a part time case. When not in lock, the front axle is totally disengaged.
I am assuming you put the kit on that modifies the transfer case, and didn't just switch to manual locking hubs?
Yes,I had to take the rear housing off the T-case to install one part of the kit(4 1/2 spider gear's instead of the 4 full spider gear's.But before I did the kit what did the lock lock? Before the kit the Bronco was Fulltime 4wd.
I found this info from another board, I hope it answers your question. I've never actually used a stock '203 to know personally.
"Let's start this with an np203 with no conversion. It is a full time transfer case...that is, of course, all four wheels receive power at all times. The shift pattern for this is:
(front)
Low Loc
Low
N
HI
Hi Loc
With this Hi is your normal driving position. All four tires are driven, but, the front and rear axles are driven independent from each other. They are free to turn at what ever speed. This is done thru a differential in the transfer case like the one in your axle. If you shift to Hi Loc you are still in Hi range, but, the front and back axles are now locked together and turn at the same speed. Again, the same way a locker works on an axle. The Lo and Lo Loc works the same way only using a lower range gear in the transfer case.
Now..part time conversion...There are a couple of conversion kits out there and I'm not sure which you have, so, I won't get into that. The end result is the same with all of them. The first thing is the locking hubs. You are now able to disconnect your front axle from the wheel. This prevents the wheel from "driving" the axle. Now your shift pattern has changed...but, not much:
(front)
Lo Loc
Lo
N
2 HI
HI Loc
The only difference is the HI Loc has become 2 HI. The differential in the transfer case has been"disconnected" so it will not drive the front axle. And this is your normal driving position."
I understand. The kit I have is where when you lock the hub's it tell's the T-case to give the front shaft power. If I lock the hub's,and leave it in 4hi I will have 4wd,but if I pull back into 4hi lock the 4wd is much better.
What the Mile Marker 501 Kit does is remove the differential gears replacing them with four tabs that locks the rear output shaft to the cross shaft of the differential and the gearbox output shaft as a result. The lack of differential gears to the crown gear on the top chain gear disables the full time function of the case.
The way the NP203 performs "LOC" or Locking to drive both axles with equal power was with a sliding collar on the top chain gear. The collar would slide over the crown gear and engage teeth on the differential case. This locked the top chain gear to the differential and would not allow the gears to spin giving a 50/50 power split. Once the transfer case is converted then the sliding collar becomes the only drive to the front drive shaft. Since the 203 can be part time in both low and high range you now are able to have two wheel drive low.
Crown gear is what they were called that I put in the back of the T-case where the rear driveshaft hook's up.thank you for helping me out with this. The kit work's great with no complant's.And I get to save on the pricey gas price's now a day's.Once again thank you.I am clear on how this setup work's now.
