Question NP208 E and 4WD Low Range

I just recently purchased a 1985 Bronco with the 5.8L and the 4SPD trans with the NP208 E attached. The vehicle has manual hubs. It runs fairly well (Exhaust leak somewhere near the right side manifold...any ideas on this are great too). I took the vehicle out and tested the 4x4 when I bought it, but I only tried high range. High Range works great and goes in no problem. The transfer case will go into neutral as well no problem. However, when I try to put it in low it seems like it is engauging, but doesn't go all the way in. It will light the 4x4 light, but it grinds the gears and doesn't work when I put it in drive from neutral (on transmission) it makes the griding noise. I asked the previous owner and he told me it needed to have the shift linkage adjusted. So I bought the book on this vehicle and according to the book the only shifter that needed adjustment was the NP203. This is the only major thing on my must fix now list for this vehicle. The body work and other mechanical stuff is minor. I need 4L to work because I will be driving in the snow and it may be required.

Sorry it was a bit long.

Thanks for any ideas.

You really shouldn't need 4 low to drive in the snow. 4 low is used for offroad stuff. You want to keep a steady 20 - 25mph in the snow, and low range won't let you do that.

I need ideas not comments on if i need it or not please

I am going to use the low range for trail riding in the snow. It will be needed snow or not. It is still a problem that I need to fix, and I need ideas on that. I don't need 4L right now, but if I do I don't have it at the moment. SO anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

[edit] Also I just read my post and failed to say that it is a 4Spd auto transmission.[/edit]

HMM

I am taking the non-replying to my post to mean one of three things. 1) No one has any clue about this (why am I doubting this) or 2) No one is willing to help a junior poster on this forum or 3) no one really gives a crap (I hope not, but this is where I am leaning). I have posted a few times in the past to this forum and gotten replies that are completely off topic (see above) and/or no replies. I think I am going to leave this board for good because it seems that unless you have a regular posting to this board no one is willing to put any thought into your questions.

So,

Thanks to all 13 of you who atleast looked in here. Maybe you guys should've replied even if you had no real ideas, but some suggestions on it anyway. I hope that this forum gets better, because I have been very disappointed with it.

Maverick -
I haven't posted for a while - been busy with other things. I'm
just up the road from you in Kent, WA. You should be able to instant message or e-mail me off the board, and we'll see what we can do about your t-case. I put the NP t-case in my 89
Bronco, and had to work with it a little bit to get the linkage, etc, right.

Let me know if you're interested -

Sometimes you have to wait more than a few hours to get a response. I've started several threads that went nowhere because people simply didn't have the answer. There are a lot of knowledgeable people in this forum, and they're always willing to help, but you need to recognize that sometimes they just don't have the answer you need. Insulting the other users may guarantee that nobody helps you in the future, which would be a real shame because there is a LOT of information to be found in these forums.

body lift?

Do you have a body lift on this? I would make sure that the lever is fully in position and not getting stopped by anything. Climb under the truck, maybe disconnect the lever and see if you can push it (or bang it) back any further. Sounds like the lever might not be moving the full range to engage it completely? Just a thought.

That was my thought as well Moose. I am going to take a look this weekend at it.

Also to Bigric: It was more than 24 hours between posts, and in that time 4 people had even bothered to look at it. Since then more have and I have gotten some really great advice and an offer for help. I am truly greatful to those that did reply and to MSAUTRY for his offer to help. I am taking him up on it. I hope to have my rig in shape for doing some trail riding this winter and maybe finding a local 4x club to join. No insult was intended. I was merely frustrated by the seeming lack of concern displayed here now and in the past.

Hey Maverick, I was sure I posted a reply to this post, but it seems to have vanished?

You might check to see if the linkage isn't gummed up or blocked with mud. I spent a few days cleaning all the junk off of mine recently. Maybe even try using a long screwdriver to manually shift the linkage into 4LO while someone moves the lever, with truck OFF, of course. I know on my Bronco, I have to play with it some to get fully into low range.

Just my 2 cents, but if you have a 4wd, you often need Low-4 to get out of a bad stuck or pull out another truck, and this range is more useful than alot of folks think.

As for the leaky manifolds, Fords are bad about cracking and causing a leak. You can opt for headers, or get new replacements for half the cost of factory ones at many salvage yards like i did for mine.

Okay. Msautry and I looked at the Lever. It is moving all the way. Still no low engagement. He and I think that it is an internal problem with the forks that move the gears into place. Which is why I can get 4Hi but not low. So short of rebuilding the Tcase (which I am leery about trying) the only option I can think of is too get a reman or used Tcase. There is a used one local for $250.00, but I may end up no better off. I could get a rebuild kit, but again my mechanical skill goes all the way up to minor engine work/suspension and stuff. I have never rebuilt anything except a 2BBL SU Type carb off a 1972 Dautsun and my dad helped me then. Also I don't have the tools needed, more than likely.

So if anyone in my area has a used NP208 that u know works and are willing to cut me a deal send me an email. Or if anyone is willing to help me rebuild it, I can get a kit for about 160.00

Thanks Guys

I have done that. It still grinds when trying to engage 4Lo.

An Update

I called a few local trans shops that service xfer cases. The 1st said it was about 280 labor + 156 for parts. Not bad, but over 400. The second said he needed to open it to know how much (sounds like a bad idea to let him start work without even a ballpark). THe third guy was honest and said about 400, but that for the most part the xfer cases don't go bad, so a local junkyard (one near me has it for 250) would more than likely be a better price and should have a good xfer case.

So when I get the 250.00 I am going to go and get a T-case from the junkyard and install it.

Thank You all for your help.

after you get that junkyard tcase, you can dismantle your old one and investigate what your problem was, if its small fix it then you will have an extra tcase for future issues.
