rearend 4 bar setup question.

I am going to use a 4 bar setup in my 54 f-100. I have a ford 9 " and was wondering about the length of the bars upper and lower. Is it better to be triangulated or parallel. Can you put the mounts on the inside of the frame rails or do they have to be on the outside. I have seen kits on ebay that seem pretty good but I am not sure .Item # 793961579. thank you for the help.

Here is some info on the differences of a parallel and triangulated 4 link:

I am going to use a triangulated on my 1960 as I plan to run 18X10 wheels on the rear.

This is what I am hoping for in the end:

I would think that the longer the bars, the better since the axle would not swing through as much of an arc during its suspension travel and stay situated front to back better but my Mustang had 9" upper bars and 17" lower bars probably because of space constraints.

Parallel bars need a transverse bar to keep the rear end situated side to side but this bar needs to be as long as possible to minimize the arc. Triangulated bars do not need the additional link because the angled bars locate the axle side to side. However because of the different arcs that each of the bars swing through, I think that the trianglated bars would bind more easily if there is little or no compliance in the bushings.

In either case, the bars parallel to the frame are better for locating the axle if the are out side further but huge meats on the back will require them being inboard.

I'm goung to use the Mustang rear end complete with triangulated links for my 55 but I will be extending the bars to meet the frame.

Hope some of the above made sense.

Regards, John

when reading up on chassis engineering by herb adams, is said that longer is better, especialy in wheel hop. but sence your isnt exactly a frame building from scratch, is best to just go with the longest that you can fit... and fits in your budget. i also would suggest to get the adjustable ones for fine tuning... air ride offers a good kit for $449, but you can find ones on ebay for about $200-$300. you can also call them or email them.. there site is www.ridetech.com
