My 98 with the 5.4 keeps stahling out immediately after I start it. If i lightly keep my foot on the gas it idles fine and runs fine. No englne light has come on and it has been doing this for a while now. I have been told about the IAC (Idle Air Control) Valve. Can any on you fill me in on what exactly this is, does and where it is. Thanks Guys, I appreciate it
The IAC is located at the back of the throttle body near the firewall. It's a cylinder about an inch in diameter and about 3-4" long with an electrical connection on one end. It's held on by two 8mm bolts. It controls the amount of air needed by the engine at idle. A faulty one will cause the problems you are having. It's fairly easy to replace. Some guys have had some luck cleaning the valve itself, but only in the short term. Better to just replace altogether.
Do a site search on IAC replacement. You will find many posts/threads on the topic. If you can change a spark plug, you have the technical ability to replace the IAC valve.
