2005 v-10 engine
As far as mileage goes I ran a 2000 F250 Superduty Crew Cab 4x4 with a 5.4 for 2 years - Averaged 10-13mpg - Any head wind and I was down shifting (always windy in ND) - Towing a moderate load was done in 3rd otherwise I would have burned up the trany with 500 downshifts. And the 13mpg was only on the best of days.
I now have an 03 V10 F250 Crew Cab Short Box 4x4.It's the same truck only newer and I now have the 6.8L. I average just about the same mileage. so far the worst being 10.8 and the best a 15.6 (that was with the wind, a light foot and at 68MPH) My overall average is between 12-13 and I have enough power to tow anything I will ever own - I can also drive into a 30MPH head wind towing my boat at 72MPH without the 5000 downshifts.
I would go with the V10, It's about the best option for $600 if you're planning to use you're truck as a truck. I have been very happy with mine so far and I've owned both. the mileage and the price isn't different enough to worry about.
Drive both and buy what suits your needs the best. Both are excellent engines and the super Duty is a great truck so you can't go wrong wither way. Good luck!!
If you want a good idea of mileage on the V10 go back to the main forum page and scroll down to the V10 Forum, there is a current thread about mileage. I beleive it is titled "How many miles per tank" or something to that regard. To get a good average add up all of the posts and average them. I think you will come out in that 11-13mpg range.a few guys are getting better and few are getting worse but it all kind of averages out. Most of these numbers are going to be coming from the 2Valve V10s so I can't garentee the same for the 3Valve but wouldn't imagine it to be much different.
One thing I didn't add in my original post is that towing a 8klb Trailer neither of the two do much better than about 7-9 depending on wind and hills. Just had a little more snort with the 10er.
I have an '05 F250 Crew Cab Short Box 4x4 with the V-10 and am getting between 9-11 MPG around town with it. I absolutly love the truck and the engine I would let you know how it tows but I haven't had the oportunity to pull my camper yet with it.
