Wheel Chatter

I Have An 2004 F-250 With A 6 Speed Man. I Have Put A 6.5" Lift With 36" Tires On It And I Have A Good Amount Of Wheel Chatter When I Take Off. I Installed A 6 Gun W/speed Loader 4" Exhaust And Afe Air Intake On It As Well, And It Gets Worse With The More Power I Give It... I Have Droped My Carrier Bearing Down Like The Lift Instructions Recomended And When I Lowered It More It Got A Little Better But The Angle Of The Bearing In Its Housing Is Not The Greatest. I Also Was Talking To A Ford Guy At The Dealer And He Said To Raise Up The Pinion Angle So He Gave Me Some 3 Degrie Shims And The Chatter Got Better But It Still Has Enough That Bothers Me And That Is Not Towing... I Don't Know If I Need Traction Bars Or If Anyone Else Has Had Any Problems Like This And Has A Great Solution.

Traction bars will help if you have axle wrap and wheel hop under hard acceleration.

If you have driveline vibration shimming the carrier bearing is the cheaper way to try and cure it. Since no two trucks seem to be the same it takes some playing around to get it as good as possible.

Or, you can go with an aftermarket driveshaft to cure the vibration. Depending on the cab and bed configuration of your truck and the length of the rear driveshaft you may be able to switch to a one piece rear shaft or you might have to spring for a two piece with a cv mounted after the carrier bearing. If I wanted to I could have gone with a one piece but opted for the two piece with the cv instead. I'd recommend Jesse at High Angle Driveline if you opt to go to a aftermarket rear driveshaft. He's very knowledgeable and helpful.

Also, I've heard of 6.0 PSD trucks with the auto having success by swapping out the tranny mount at the trans crossmember to one from a 7.3 truck. They've claimed that the 7.3 PSD mount is stiffer than the 6.0 PSD mount. Not sure if it's the same case with the manual trans or not but it might be something to look into.

Hope this helps.

DCSpecial is right, you may need to shim the carrier bearing more to cure the take off shudder. Most people give you the rule of thumb for every inch drop, shim the carrier bearing 1/4" down. Doesn't apply to mine and probably not yours. My 6" lift required a 3" drop on the carrier bearing to get rid of the shudder.

I would definately try the shims first. Traction bars, new driveshafts, etc can start costing much more than a few shims ever would.

Jake, I have an auto, CC, SB. The rear is block lifted, and only the carrier bearing is shimmed. It is shimmed with a bracket I purchased from Superlift, 3" drop, and it is angled which kinda made it bolt up nice and snug.

I have a crew cab short bed as well.....I hope to have time to install the two piece driveshaft from High Angle Driveline over the weekend.
There are a lot of people with CC SWB SDs that have had one piece rear drivelines installed and it has cured their driveline vibration.
