After some research I have learned its not uncommon for the doors on late mod (2000+-) F-150s to crack. we have one thats cracked just above the level of the bottom of the window towards the back of the door. The dealer says its out of warranty and wont repair it. Anyone have this problem with sheetmetal cracks?
Not me, but have heard of it. there is supposed to be a support bracket that can be used to prevent it from happening again, but if its out of warranty already you'll have to pay for it.
A TSB is just a bulletin to help dealers repair problems. It's not a recall. If Ford specifically says in the TSB that the warranty on the affected part has been extended then it would be covered after the original warranty, otherwise it wouldn't be.
Unless that TSB has been superseded by a newer one what I found says "Eligible Under The Provisions Of The Basic Warranty Coverage "
ya i got a 99 with a crack. door is rusting on the bottom too. not the other door. so u know its cuz water gets int there. even when i put my window up it comes up wet. that bull and ford should cover that. i mean u spend 100k on three trucks and they dont cover it. man. get it together. i love my truck but i dont understand why they dont cover such a simple thing. ford is cheaping us out on this one guys.
I have a 97 F-150 Lariat that started cracking when it was just a little over a year old, but only on the left door. The dealer repaired it while under warranty. Another problem is the resin used to fill the roof panel seams. It is prone to cracking which leads to rust under the paint. I've had my entire roof redone five times. They had to remove the windshield, grind out the old resin and repaint the roof each time. Twice they broke the windshield upon trying to remove it. The repair would last anywhere from a month to maybe six months. The last time it lasted for about two years. It is now cracked again and the roof is rusted along both seams. The Ford dealer that repaired it only warrants their work for one year so they won't cover it this time. While waiting at the dealer to show my truck to a factory rep I found fourteen used trucks on the dealers front line with the same problem. Even found some explorers with cracked roof seams. Ford doesn't see this as a problem. If the resin or sealer they use isn't the problem, I wonder if the spot welds are broken, causing the roof to flex. Guess I won't know until I tear into it myself. Anyone else had this problem?
My 97 F-150 drivers side door cracked badly in 2001. The local dealer, that I didn't buy the truck from, talked the regional Ford rep into covering the repairs. Didn't cost me a dime and made the dealership my number one choice for future purchases. Its worth checking with other dealers - they all don't have the same relationships with the Ford reps. Good luck!
mine aren't cracked as far as i can see, i even looked under the weatherstip at the curve , just above the handle, but i did see some posts where people were thinking cabin pressure is either causing this or making the problem worse. i know mine has cabin pressure, if both windows are up i just about halve to shut the door(s) twice , and i really hate slamming the doors knowing the problem. All this to say, when i'm getting inside, i turn the key so i can let one window down a few inches, then the door shuts easily. So i know cabin pressure has to make it worse. plus ford's cheaper design, prob. thinner steel. ('01 reg cab XLT sport, 63k) my .02$
I had the same problem with my 97. It had 83,000 miles on it when i took it in. Not had any problems since and i put 24,000 on it since. I also told them that i wanted the bottom seam on the doors and tail gate fixed because it was starting to get rust bubbles on the seam. They also fixed that under the so called "Silent Problem". And the funny thing about it was a body shop tipped me off on the problem and he told me ford will fix it hands down. When i went in there the dealer asked me if i had warrenty left on it, i said no and told him i didnt need a warrenty, it was a ford problem , which then i told them that makes it their problem. So they proceeded to set up a apointment and also gave me a loaner car for 3 days. I feel that the dealers are trying to jag you fellas around by telling you its out of warrenty because i was 47,000 miles and 3.5 years past my warrenty. You need to make sure you do your homework before you go in those places, and dont act like you dont know what your talking about. You need to be persistant and see what you can get out of them, because you have nothing to lose by trying. Good Luck, Shawn.
dang straight, if ford wants me to buy threee more trucks, cover me for simple things. dont waste my time. here in mpls i went to minnetonka, suburb, no help. come on. if u want repeat business do the simple things and dont tell me door rust can be rubbed off with steel wool. come on.
