First let me start off by saying thanks to Col. Flashman for giving me th e bug to once again start my resto on my 58!
Ok now to my question, I pulled off my rear fenders tonite along with my steps. Unfortunatly I found some cancer on the fenders, no big deal, but the original owner in his infinite wisdom flame axrd a section of the steps to install the 2" semi pipes behind the cab. I've checked my catalog's (mid-fifty, john's, npd) but I can't find the steps for a 58 stepside shortbed. Any help out there? thanks again yall!!! Happy Fording!!
I'm not aware of reproduction steps being available, and I looked pretty hard for them a year or so ago. I believe that the steps are the same from '57 to '72, but I still had lots of trouble finding a good used pair. Had to have a guy dig some up for me in Texas and bring them back to Minnesota. Everything I found around here was useless.
I have a useable set; someone torched the bolts to get 'em off, and there are some minor dings, but they are workable. I have thought about pulling a mold off of them and poppin' 'em out out of fiberglas; think there would be a market? I'm parting out the truck I was gonna use 'em on; I might sell 'em.
There's a side step available for sale on eBay right now. Unfortunately, it's only one, not both. The item number is 4510823274. If you're not familiar with finding stuff on eBay, you can just enter that item number in the search function and go directly to it.
I don't know if there would be a market for fiberglass repros. I'd have been interested when I was having so much trouble finding steel ones, but I eventually did find them, and steel was what I really wanted.
It's surprising that no one makes them because Ford used basically the same stepside boxes from 53 till 79. The 79 short bed I had, had the stubby steps on the box. Would they be available through Ford? Probably expensive as heck. Another option might be to find a larger farm style truck at a salvage yard and take the cab steps and cut and paste(weld). Good luck.
I have one of those spare tire carriers, too. I never used it because I couldn't find a fender with the well cut in it. I don't think anybody makes a 'glas fender with the tire well; I've never seen one.
I've got a fender with the cut out that I will be taking off of Old Smokey. It is a 3/4 ton fender, but the cut out could probably be removed and used on another fender.
