timing
i have a 88 f150 5.0 and i was just need to know how to check for slack in timeing. if a timeing chain were to break on the 5.0 would the valves be far enough out to bend them? i just want to check up on this for my personal peace of mind. thanks, chrono

I'm not an expert by any means, but I have heard several times that the timing chain should be replaced on these if there is any kind of doubt as to it's condition. You will have to access the chain to check for slack (refer to chiltons) and the possibilty of the valves getting damaged......100%.

You can check for slack without pulling the cover as follows: Turn the engine with a socket wrench on the damper bolt on the front of the engine until the engine gets to TDC timing mark on the damper. Then pull the cap off the distributor, then while watching the rotor, begin to turn the engine in the opposite direction. Stop turning when you first see the rotor begin to move. Now look at the timing marks on the damper, and if it is more than 5 degrees from where you started, then it would be a good idea to replace the timing chain.

It is possible to bend valves on a 302 if the timing chain jumps and you change the distributer timing to compensate so that it runs and it jumps again. Once had a truck in the shop with a bad timing chain. Fixed the chain reset the timing and the truch ran but was skipping bad. Ran compression check and 0 compression on 3 cylinders. Service manager claimed that the chain was on wrong because a 302 wouldn't bend valves if the chain jumped. Had to pull the heads on my own time to prove him wrong. Three bent valves!!! Customer admitted to advancing the distributer to get the truck running to bring to the shop and the chain jumped again in route.
