New thermostat?

Have a 92 V6 XL and when the van is idle say at a light, the heater blows a luke warm-coolish air but, when actually in motion, the heater works perfect. Is this just a simple case of a malfunctioning thermostat?

That sounds more like the water pump. The pump is not pushing much coolant when the engine is running that slow. The coolant in the heater core cools off. Rev the engine and more hot coolant flows through the core and you get more heat. That's my guess.

I would say your system needs a flush and possibly a new heater core-it sounds fouled-especially if the operating temp is where it is supposed to be.

I like the idea of flushing things out first. It's cheaper and may fix the problem. Someone here suggested flushing the heater core seperate from the rest of the system and to flush it both ways. Good idea.

Then if it still doesn't work check out the pump.

you can check the water pump by undoing the heater hose by the water outlet of the engine and installing another peice of hose there. start engine. water should shoot out of the hose at idle. if not your pump is bad. keep a water hose in radiator to keep it full when your doing this.
