I did a search on Broken Headlight ***** in this forum and got most of my questions answered. It seems that you cannot buy just the **** itself; you have to purchase the whole assembly (other than going to a junk yard). So I am going to buy a new one.
I didn't see any instructions on how to swap them out (for my particular truck; I did find instructions for older trucks). If anyone has these instructions handy I'd appreciate it. Otherwise I'll just take a stab at it and see how it goes. I've got a '00 F150 SC 4.6L. Thanks!
Thanks for your replies! I'm sure my truck is out of warranty, but I will call the dealership and see if they will at least sell me the ****. I couldn't find just the **** out on the Internet (but didn't search too hard).
I'm definitely going to try out the fog light modification. I thought it was silly that this wasn't an option when I bought the truck (to just have the fog lights on).
I haven't mustered up the wavos to try the actual modification yet but I figured their details on how to remove the **** and the assembly would shine some light on your delimma.
That is a great instruction page! Now Im gonna have to do that this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes and how easy it is. (Or how hard)
Thanks for the link!
Done deal. Just as the instructions say. Kinda nice being able to turn on the fogs when I want. Just be patient and light handed so you can feel the notches and indents when removing the switch and ****.
ok A little clarity...in the pre 2000 models, follow the instructions on the link above for removing the switch and the housing. For the 2000 and newer, the switch comes out a bit differently.
Turn your lights to the ON position and pull out to turn on the fogs. The little hole you insert your small screwdriver into is there, BUT!!!! Press IN on the screw driver and pull out on the ****. You are pressing in on a little tab inside that releases the ****. I just stuck the screwdriver in and pryed and broke the tab that holds the **** in. So I had to superglue the **** back on so when I pulled, it would pull the fogs on.
To pull the switch out of the dash, there is a notch at the bottom if the face plate. insert a small screwdriver in there and pry a bit outward. Carefull not to over do it and break the internal housing. Once you get the bottom out a bit, take your screwdriver to the top and do the same. There are 3 spring clips holding the switch in to the dash. Wedge the top out and then you should be able to remove the whole assembly.
To get to what you need to modify, look at the backside of the faceplate and going around the edge, you will see about 6 little "posts" sticking through to the switch. (About 1/8 in long) They look like they are melted on the backside to hold them on but it is only epoxy. I used diagonal wire cutters to "scrape" the epoxy up and off the "posts". This allowed me to remove the face plate. the "ramp" that you need to modify is on the back side of the faceplate. can't miss it. Clear plastic.
Then just using superglue or epoxy, you can secure the face plate again.
Wiring is the same as the instructions posted above in the other post, in the link.
