Tie Rod Assemblies?

Tie Rod Assemblies?
I am trying to track down a complete tie rod assembly with adjuster sleeve for my 1978 F150 Standard Cab 4x4 w/Dana 44 front end...
I would think it would be a simple enough exercise in wallet-depletion
So I go to the local parts counters....All the local dealers ask if I need the inner or outer....what's that about?
I have 1 damn tie rod assembly (that I can see) that goes knuckle to knuckle and is comprised of a short shaft(drive side) and a long one(passngr side) and a sleeve holding them together
then some dealers get to talking about tapered and untapered....
hell, I just want to order the right damn parts anyone help me here? Is there that much variance in one production year?
Also can I just bang the old one out or do I need some kind of magical tool here?
Thanks as always
