i have big o tires and the warranty, and yesterday i got a mesquite thorn in the sidewall of one of my tires...i brought in the tire expecting a new one, but they just patched the hole in the sidewall. i was under the impression that you couldn't patch a sidewall. am i totally wrong about this?
Getting tube put in might not be a bad idea. My buddy had a 44 inch TSL Super Swamper slashed, and since it is is spare, he had a tube put in it to avert having to buy another.
It really depends where the thorn went through the side. Usually anything near the lower 75% of the tire (starting from the rim) sidewall junks the tire on a radial. The closer to the shoulder the better. I would not use it for a front tire and if it bothered me I would make it a spare. It also depends on the size, usually anything 1/4" and smaller is okay.
Yeah, you need to make them give you a new tire, thats why you have the warranty. You dont mess with the sidewall of a tire, because the side wall is where all the flexing and "give" takes place, when you corner, the sidewall is what gives the tire its flexibility, and when you start patching and messing with it, you are taking some risks. Bottom line, its unsafe, i wouldnt ride on it. What I have always learned, was if its withen about an inch of the sidewall, you need a new tire. So, like i said, you have a warranty, they should replace that tire for you.
