I have three Broncos and I'm blessed my wife loves them too. The only vehicles I own are my Broncos and every eight years or so I buy one and completely rebuild it. I need your opinions so please feel free to express them. This spring I will put a new motor, tranny and rear end in the old girl and make her new again. I'm sticking with the 351 and thinking of having the local engine shop make me up a short block assy. I've never bought after market aluminum heads and thought maybe I'll give them a try. Now this Bronco is a daily driver that takes me to work and hauls a smaller trailer and a descent sized boat. I'd like some added torque and muscle but don't need nothing crazy. I'll put on some headers and a high powered ignition system. I'll rebuild the rear end myself but thinking of buying a jet transmission. I want a good solid drive train.
Let me know what kind of pistons, cam, intake etc... and brands. What heads I should buy or stick with rebuilt stock cast? Are the Jet Transmission really worth it? I haven't rebuilt a Bronco in over four years and not up on the latest aftermarket wonders and power upgrades. The main goal is to have a little more power but I do not want to have to burn premium fuel. This will be a dependable daily driver.
well i need info bud, what year are we talking about here. what tranny is in there currently? go to controlpanel and fill in the signature area with your rigs info please. it helps us help you.
It's a 1994 Eddie Bauer Edition with the 351, E4OD Transmission and 8.8 rear end with 3.55 gearing. The old girl has 150,000. miles and everything is still original, including the radio.
well you engine mods are slightly limited due to the Speed Density system. I would look into a jasper motor . they can set you up with something a little better then stock. then you can get some headers, an edelbrock efi truck intake would also compliment a stronger motor. edelbrocks aluminum heads are a nice touch as well they are mild compared to say AFR brand heads. the rest of the exhaust from the header back should also be redone because it is very restrictive from the factory.
as for your tranny the e4od is one of the most expensive around, but if its built good it should hold up for a long time. as for Jet themselves no personal experience there but search the net for as many tranny builders you can this way you get the best price/build you can. but expect to pay over $2000 for one easy that wouldnt include install either. if your just gonna get your motor rebuilt , find a reputable shop in your area they should be able to hook you up as well. a good cam for this motor is 32-255-5 by compcam. its computer friendly so no worries there.
Kemicalburns thanks for the quick reply. I didn't give much thought on the speed density issue and glad you mentioned that. I have to do more research since my knowledge of that system is pretty much unknown. I agree, a true dual exhaust with headers would make wonders with the performance and I'll be doint that. You mentioned AFR brand heads are more performance orientened then the Edelbrock. Would the AFR heads work with the speed density system? My main focus is to add some power and have a chance to play with my Bronco alittle. That being said I want to do all of that and not sacrifice my idle or my daily driveability. I've just recently checked into the Edelbrock intake system and on paper it looks good. Anyone know the cost of the intake and have used it or know of someone that has. Looking to see if it's as good as Edelbrock says it is. I'm excited and like alittle performance. My main goal is dependability and that was why I was asking about the Jet Transmissions. I've always had the C-6 and AOD and never owned the E4OD. I've heard they have had their problems and are weak until they are rebuilt with modified internal gears. I've rebuilt my own transmissions in the past but figured the E4OD needed the extra beefing that I would not know how to do. The more ideas and opinions the better.
stay clear of true duals. a single exhaust will perform far better and stay out of harms way when your 4x4in. the AFR heads wont affect the speed density. what affects sd is to much cam. thats why the 32-255-5 comp cam works so well. go here www.fordfuelinjection.com and read up. this site explains the speed density system really well . I know a few people running that truck efi intake. its about $550 for the upper/lower combo and had produced well for them. if you decieded to stroke the motor for more torque/horsepower then Mass air should be considered but is very costly due to your tranny type .
I Have A 95 302 And This Summer I Did Some Extensive Mods To Her. I Bought The Edelbrock Intake Manifold An D A Bbk T.b ( Twin 56mm). Those Were The First Mods. I Did Before The Rest, And They Made A Huge Difference. I Would Reccomend Them To Anybody. I Paid About 600 For The Intake And 325 For The T.b. After I Did The Rest Of The Mods.i Can Tell An Even Bigger Diff. That Compliment The Rest Of The Parts. You Can Check Out My Profile To See The Parts I Used. If You Decide To Really Add Some Power You Will Have To Change To Mass Air. Ford Motorsport Sell The Kit For Around 600 And It Includes Everything You Need.
