Well after alot of trouble shooting on a cold start problem I decided to go get some new GP's. (My 2000 has 81,000 miles on it). I decided to test the relay first just in case. Metered the coil and it was all ok. Relay was firing. Checked the constant from the battery. All is ok at 12vdc. But the terminal was corroded. Tested the other side of the relay anyway. Was getting voltage through but dont know about the amperage. Went to take off the terminal nut and found broken plastic that the corrosion proabably ate away. Has anyone seen this? Went ahead and ordered one up. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem.
Im new to the forum. Please be gentle. (I know this is prob a question that comes up ALL the time.)
Breif History: I go to a cold spot all the time (In the teens usualy). A couple weekends ago it took me 1 hour to start the beast(in 32-39degree weather. Tried all the tricks..... 3 cycles of the GP's and left the ingniton on for 2+ min. To no avail. I know the glow plugs are prob ready to be swapped out BUT. (manufacture says 60-80thou). When shes plugged in she starts No Problem.
Sounds like the relay at the very least is bad, so start there. Then if it's still having starting problems you can work on the glow plugs. Our '97's first bad relay burned up inside once the contact point that the plate hits got arced away enough. This made the plastic really brittle around that lug, so when I went to take the nut off it just spun the stud right out of the relay housing. Obviously be careful when putting on the new one not to overtorque it and crack the housing again.
you need to ohm the gp's before you condem them. Disconect both valve cover wiring harness and ohm the outer 2 pins on either connector (4 total per connector, the middle 5 have to do with the injectors) to battery ground. You should get between .2 and 2.0 ohms. I ohm'd mine and all were about .7-.9 except for one, therefore i have 7 good gp's. When i turn my key on, my working 7 gp's draw about 150 amps at first then drops down to a little more then 100.
Thank you! I have searched high and low for a picture of wiring diagram (dont even have one in my service manual). Do you know where I can locate one? When I test the glow plugs i need the battery still connected correct. Just unplug the harness and meter out the 2 outside pins on both sides of the plug to ground. Thanks for your quick responce.
