I read the thread about testing glow plugs with a test light and all of mine did light. the glow plug relay and light comes on for 10 sec then the relay clicks for about 5 seconds then stops. it doesn't matter when I try starting either when light goes out or after the clicking stops my truck emits enough white smoke to fill my cul-de-sac( neighbors not happy) . after the truck warms up 1-2 min the smoke is no longer visible . now I did read about the autolite 1108 gp and they have been in the truck for a year same time as a new gp control relay. some of the gp connectors plastic are broken. there were no issues till now.
Thanks and have an easy day
Wow, that's WAY more smoke than I would think from a simple heat issue. I would venture you've got an injector sticking open. If it was me the first thing I'd do is run some diesel fuel cleaner through it, but it might need more help than that.
The smoke smells like fuel? Or does it smell like coolant?
I like stanadyne, and biodiesel works really well, but if you've been running a cleaner regularly it probably won't help. If it were me, I'd fire it up cold and crack injector lines one at a time to try and identify which cylinder is having trouble. It is possible there is some other issue like a sticky valve lifter which will prevent compression and thus the ability to burn the fuel, but usually this type of issue will not generate so much smoke, thus I suspect a sticky injector hanging open.
As a disclaimer you should wait for more responses though. I am pretty familiar to diesels, but pretty new to these Ford IDI's.
Fill your fuel filter with diesel kleen or ATF. Put it back on let it run for 30 or so seconds and then shut it off and let it sit for 12-24 hours. It will thoroughly clean the injectors and ip.
I went out to p/u a tractor and while in transit I noticed a lot of smoke while on a downhill . blueish smoke. I'm thinking the exhaust valves are not functioning properly. as of now when I start the truck and try to increase the rpm at 2500 she is rough and emitting what i smell as oil smoke. could this issue be causing all my problems?
Yup, that would stand to reason. Maybe completely unrelated to fuel.
The detail that it goes away with heat makes me think sticky rings which potentially fixed with a solvent based motor flush. Otherwise, it could be a handful of other issues solved by a teardown.
I would say compression and leak down tests are in order, but most folks don't have the equipment for this on a diesel- high pressure gauge and special injector/glow plug fittings.

Planning on doing this to my son's truck. I've heard this before. Is there any difference on what flavor ATF? Type F? Mercon V? Dex/Merc? Does it matter?
And what is the consensus best Fuel filter for a '94 Turbo Diesel? Wix? Motorcraft? Etc?
