I have replaced the wheels/tires on my 2002 Ranger XLT with Nitto 255/55 X 18 tires on 18 X 7.5 wheels. Does anyone have any idea what the proper tire pressure for this combo would be? When I bought the tires the dealer said he wasn't sure and had the guy mounting the tires put in 40 psi at all 4 corners. That much pressure is just to much for the street I feel. I swear I could feel the white lines on the road as I drove them. I tried lowering the pressure to 35 psi and that helped a bit, but not much. I tried going to the Nitto tire web site and sending them an Email but they never responder. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can figure it out. Maybe a math formula or a web site that has that kind of information on it? These tires are just to expensive to ware out prematurely because of over/under inflation.
Tire pressures are dictated by the load they carry. For instance, BF Goodrich charts indicate that a pressure of 25 psi is used for a load of 1400 lbs. (per tire) for the 31x10.50 All-Terrain TA.
I don't know what the front and rear weights of the Ranger is, but I'd guess that the 25 psi pressure is adequate. Lower pressures shouldn't be used because of the danger of the tire coming off the rim. I've used 25 psi for years with good wear patterns on my 1991 Ranger.
well, Im going to have to say that since you decided to go with the oversized rims you altered the stock ride performance or your vehicle. every little bump or hole in the road is going to be more evedent because of the amout of ruber between the rims and the road. alot of times a lower profile of tire is more suseptable to sidewall damage because of low psi. so I wouldnt recomend running too low of psi. youve already sacraficed comfort so if I were you I would run between 34 and 38 psi.for best wear and to prevent any possible pothole bruises. hope this has helped.
