Now I am as much of a red blooded American male as the next guy, and I do love the NFL, so please don't take my first comment as an insult to the NFL.
The America Theme:
I love this country, and I'm sure so do the high-ranking officials in the NFL. I was pleased that there was a pro-America theme. Also, I understand that pre-game and half-time show performers are selected sometimes a year or more in advance. However, I still thought it was odd that neither of the two big performers were born in or even resided in America. I think they ought to have had in this case multiple groups working together as they've done in the past, if only to put some Americans in this pro-America show.
Kurt Warner's Destiny:
Kurt Warner has appeared to be a deeply religious man and all-around respectable guy. It is perhaps because of this that the good Lord granted him the strength and opportunity to win his first Super Bowl.
However, I do not believe that the team around him is as rspectable as their quarterback. As I watch the Rams they have an attitude that I find to be generally rude and disrespectful to other teams, more than just the rivalry you normally see. When Vermiel was their coach I think he kept this attitude in check. But now Martz is in charge, and the way he acts serves only to foster this disreputable behavior. While his team does not for the most part "fight dirty", Mike Martz often breaks the unwritten rules of football, such as not running up the score. It's considered to be "just the way it's done" to put in your backups and stick to the running game when its halfway throught the fourth quarter and you're up by 24. Not the Rams though, for them it is just more time to get it in the end zome a couple more times.
This attitude I think was beginning to get into even Warner, and so the Rams, with Kurt along for the ride, were not destined to win this time.
The Team Aspect:
The Patriots made a big deal about team as opposed to player. This I feel had a big hand in their victory. Where everybody on the Rams was trying to make a name for themselves, the Patriots quietly worked together and overcame what ever was thrown at them. Eleven men playing solid football will beat five average guys and six superstars six and a half days a week.
Cadillac's Sponsorship:
I have no problem with Cadillac sponsoring parts of the Super Bowl, as it's just part of the way business is done. What I do have a problem with is Cadillac giving a $40,000 SUV to a man who next season will undoubtedly make several million dollars. That $40,000 sure would have fed a hell of a lot of hungry children. Call me nuts, but in my opinion Cadillac has no place giving this man a free SUV when if they were that anxious to throw away money there are a lot better places for it.
Sorry for this rant folks, but that's my Super Sunday $0.02.
I liked the Patriots being announced as a team. That showed a lot of class. They got there as a team, so they chose to be introduced as a team. They came into the game knowing they had to step up their game a couple of notches and they did it. They shut down the highest powered offense in the NFL, and did it very well. They deserved to win.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Feb-02 AT 07:04 PM (EST)]It was Cadillac's money and truck. They should be able do what they want with it. They were rewarding the game's MVP. Yea I suppose they could've said - You did so good we will donate 40,000 big ones to the charity of your choice. But that I think would've been in poor taste. Besides, you don't know how much money Cadillac does donate to charities if at all.
Besides they regulary give a car away at other events they sponsor, golf, etc.
Well said Law and i agree with most of what you said...but then i also agree with Ultra and what he said and now i will throw my $.02 i really liked what he said "it will be a TEAM truck!!" that showed alot of class as did the whole team during the interviews
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Feb-02 AT 08:19 PM (EST)]I know this has nothing to do with the previous posts, but I think the most touchng moment of the evening was the Budwieser ad with the Clydesdales kneeling to Liberty.
I also thought that George Bush giving the coin toss to Roger showed some class.
Good game with a stoey book ending. One of the best Superbowls IMHO.
Brady was asked at the end of the game what he drives...His reply.... a Dodge pickup. Now Caddy may have given him a car but I bet those Dodge boys are thinking up some good commercial scheme involving this new hero / Patriot etc. But then again, what good advertiser could leave that one alone? jim
