I purchased an old boat and went to pick her up this morning. Got mired in some wet mud and put my 95 F 250 PSD into 4 wheel drive. My system is lever operated with stock auto hubs. The indicator light came on but it start making loud clicking a popping noises as if the gears weren't quite catching. No matter what I tried (shifting in and out of 4 X 4, putting the tranny into neutral or park, moving forward or in reverse) it sounded as if I were grinding metal. Had to have the guy pull me out with his Jeep....embarrassing.
I pulled out on the street, took it out of 4 wheel drive and back up to release the hubs. It "clunked" once more and drives fine in 2 wheel mode. Any of you experts know what is going on? If it failed while I was out in the boonies, I'd still be hiking home in the rain and snow.
sounds like your auto hubs are taking a dump. does your air blow out of your defrost vents when you put it in 4x4?? could be a vaccum leak but i bet its in the hub itself. the premium warn locking hubs are the way to go. never have to worry about it again, yeah you will have to get out and lock the hubs, least you wont have to get tugged out by a jeep then
on a '95 the hubs are mechanical not vacuum if the are grinding they are shot, the ones on my '95 bronco went out the 6th time i put it into 4 wheel drive. get some warn manuals and you wont ever have to worry about it again
Thanks for the information group. I have heard great feedback on Warn Hubs. Will the manual hubs work with my lever operated stock system? Are they easy to install?

yes they will work fine, you just have to lock them in every time you go into 4 wheel drive. the install is pretty easy, you will need a hub wrench(you can it at an auto parts store) and a few metal picks will help. since you will have everything apart you should get some inside hub seals and repack the inner wheel bearnings(or replace them if they are old)
I went out to try my 4X4 operation and it worked flawlessly. Could it be I was caught in an "in between" gear situation? If my hubs are bad would they work intermittently? Thanks for your replies.
