I posted a while back in a tread on air filters . I mentioned I had scrapped the stock airbox and filter and replaced it with the "kwikk" filter ( NAPA 6637 ) , in makeing the change I found the Tornado in the intake tube , I have had the truck a few months and had no idea it was in there . Someone said I should check back with the differences I noticed with and with out the Tornado . To that point my mileage had been a respectable 15/16 mpg. in all around driving....WELL , the first tank of fuel after removing the obstruction.... I mean Tornado the mileage went from 15.8 mpg. with the Tornado in place , to 17.3 mpg. ! And the truck feels more responsive . I know this is far from a scientific test , and only one tank of fuel , but a 1.5 mpg increase just by removing something that is suppose to increase mileage !? Anyone want to buy a Tornado CHEAP !
Thanks for the update. The concept of the Tornado sounds good on paper, and might actually help a normally aspirated vehicle. But, the turbo-diesel is so good at swirling the incoming air, anything trying to help is actually an obstruction. I'm glad you found it in there, or you could have been limping along with it indefinitely.
If you found it by putting on the "Kwikk" (Spelling) filter that means whoever put it on didn't install it correctly!! It don't go between the Air filter and the turbo!! It goes between the Intercooler and the Intake manifold right before it turns down into the motor!! I put one on and it helped my mileage!! You might try to put it on correctly and see what happens!!
Very first time I saw the Tornado, I also saw a demonstration of how it "works".
Through a straight clear pipe you can actually see how it creates a swirl effect like a tornado. The problem with the demonstration is that there is no bend in the pipe.
That got me thinking. There is a fundamental flaw in the design of the Tornado and it working with any intake system on diesel or gas engines. The swirl effect produced by the Tornado is lost when the air rounds a corner. Air turbulence is changed moving around the bend of a pipe, or through the intake manifold runners. So whatever gains you may get immediately after the Tornado, the effect is lost just a few inches down pipe when it rounds a corner.
Soooo, that just makes the Tornado a $60 piece of scrap metal.
If you want more air, get a bigger intake and manifold, if it's still not enough, add a turbo or supercharger. A stationary piece of metal blocking a tube won't give you anything else.
Do you think I'm right? This was just an observation that I made after I saw a demo once. I haven't seen any data to disprove this theory, but then again, I haven't seen anything about this possibility before either. Please discuss with an ice cold beer in hand.

My truck's a'96 so no intercooler . The Tornado was in the plastic section that connects the filter housing to the turbo inlet right where the plastic is clamped to the metal portion of the inlet .
Either way preturbo, post turbo I think it is useless. Especially if it is installed post turbo. the point of the tornado is to swirl the air, a wonderfull concept for suspending atomized fuel in the air, but your psd only has air, no suspended fuel in there, so what are you gaining by swirling the air before it goes into your motor, and when you compare a gasser intake to a psd the gasser can, sometimes, gain a little bit of ram air effect by swirling the air, your psd with 20 psi doesn't need any "ram air" effect at all. It's got 20 psi of ram air!!!! so all your doin is obstructing your intake. I know I will never buy one, or need one.
