extra weight for traction?

It's that snow and ice season coming and I don't own a 4 WD. Do you guys recommend to use extra weight in the box? If so, what should be used?

I use 6 to 10 sand bags. I put them in rubber made containers so I don't get sand all over.

weight

I would go with around 500lbs sand or steel bars in front of the bed or over the axle and 4 good quality snow tires.

and a tow rope... never leave home without it. It stinks to get stuck then have another vehicle to help but nothing to pull with!

Just remember that what ever you use, make sure to secure it well, as it will become a projectile in the even of an accident.

I learned this tid bit the hard way.

I no longer used bed weight for this very reason, just good tires.

500 lbs of sand over the rear wheels should do it. No sub. for chains or 4X4 though!

Cheers!

Watch where you place it in the bed. Ideally it should be located between the wheel wells over the rear axle. Placing it too far back makes the truck tailheavy. Visualize the pendulum on a grandfather's clock if you want to know how handling will be affected.

on my last 4x2, I used an old scrap of quarter inch poplar flooring between the wheel wells, framed it with scrap pressure treated 4x4, and inserted a rubbermaid box from Walmart in the middle to hold 3 or 4 sandbags, so they wouldnt flop all over. There are slots in the side of the bedliner into which you can attach some 2x4 supports. Worked well for many years, and in the spring you have a clean box of sand which you can store, instead of broken up sandbags with sand all over your box! Good luck. Makes a big difference expecially climbing hills in the snow with no 4x4..
